wire mesh question?
So a quick question how would one make the edges of wire mesh safe? Currently, i have a converted aquarium cage with a DIY wire mesh top but at the moment I've had to put the top on upside down because the edges of the mesh are super sharp and I don't want my little penny hurting herself on it if she ever manages to reach it But it does mean that I have to deal with sharp bits instead and have already got a couple of scratches.
so any tips on blunting the edges of the mesh?

Re: wire mesh question?
I've heard of people using non-toxic pet safe glue to blunt them. Running hot glue along the sharp edges!

Re: wire mesh question?
I just cut mine as close to the edge of each square as possible so there's no sharp bits sticking out.

Re: wire mesh question?
Maybe try sanding the edges down a bit at a slight angle as well so it is kind of rounded?

Re: wire mesh question?
You could add a wooden frame., so you hold that instead of the wire. I would also try the other suggestions to make the sharp bits less sharp.

Agreed, I have used both of these suggestions on my cage.
I've attached a picture of one of the doors of my cage as an example. Both doors and the roof are done the same way.

I also cut my mesh as close as possible to the edge of each square - so the edges of my mesh aren't sharp.

Re: wire mesh question?
Perhaps you could try to solder the sharp bits? A soldering tool is likely not very expensive if you don't already have one.

Re: wire mesh question?
A bit late replying but thank you, everyone, for your solutions. I did cut the mesh as close to the edge as I could but the bits are still sharp so gonna glue gun them with a view to getting a soldering iron for future builds.

Re: wire mesh question?
Just bear in mind that soldering to zinc coated steel won't be the easiest thing to do. I've not tried doing this but normally soldering to steel is a real pain to get right. Small amounts of hot glue therefore would probably be better. If you do use solder though, make sure you use lead free solder and NOT leaded solder, also make sure you remove the flux build up afterwards, both leaded solder and the flux within leaded/lead-free solder is danagerous to hamsters.
