Default respiratory infections

hello everyone

sadly just lost my female syrian to a respirtory infection.

i can't get my head around it. 3 days ago she was fine and now shes just recently taken her final breathe

and theres one thing that made me make this post.. we took her to the vet and was prescribed antibiotics and painkillers to give her, day 2 of giving them to her she totally stopped having discharge from nose and was no longer struggling to breathe. no sneezes or anything but she just got weaker and weaker and slept the whole time. until about 30 mins ago where she stopped breathing..

but why? why did the terrible symptoms go away but still she got weaker and passed. its really bugging me. we did everything we could to make her drink and eat and an hour before she passed she took some water off a spoon but fell asleep not long after for the last time. it hurts.

Aww I am sorry to read about your hamster.

How old was she?

Glad you took her to the vets and got her treatment - but her immune system probably was low at the time of the infection and even though she seemed to be getting better - sometimes the body is weakened to the point of not being able to cope.

At least she fell asleep with you and felt safe and comfortable.

Rest in peace little one - run free at the rainbow bridge

thanks for the kind words, we had her for just over a year but we believe she was returned to the shop because she was much larger than any of the other syrians there and they never really told us her age so we speculate no older than a year and a half. she was eager to escape the shop and my partner couldnt resist taking her because of her distress. so it does bring comfort that she was given everything she needed before her time came.

I'm sorry for your loss.
I'd agree that she was probably too weak to fight off the infection. It may have entered the bloodstream and at this point they will not be able to get better. You tried your best for her and she was loved, safe and warm in her own home.
A year and a half is actually quite an elderly hamster especially for a female so she really did have a good life and was much loved.
Play well at the bridge little one
