Default Questions about genotypes/genetic codes

I've been studying Syrian genetics lately, and I am confused about some genetic codes; there seems to be no exact coding; some sites give different genetic codes than others.

For example:

Golden: (++), other sites (AA or Aa).
Banded: (BaBa or Baba); other sites (Ba-) or (Ba_)
Satin: (Sasa); other sites (Sa-)
Rex: (rxrx); other sites (Rxrx) or (Rx-)
Short Hair: (Ll); other sites (L-)

Which one is correct here?

Other questions;

1. How do you call a hamster that is:

Color: Golden
Pattern: Banded
Coat Type: Long Hair, Rex, Satin,

Is it "Golden Banded Long Hair Rex Satin"?

2. Does it need to be Color first + Pattern + Coat Type?
3. How do I write the genetic code?
4. Should it be in alphabetical order?
5. How do you write a genetic code for a hamster "who carries, or carrier" a certain gene?

Correction:

1. How do you write the phenotype name?

Also, what would be the result if you were to breed two carriers? Example: Rex carrier and Rex carrier?

I’m not experience in genetic code in hamster. All I know is the very basics from studying biology. But this link will help explain genetic codes in hamsters - Genetics and Inheritance and also this link has Syrian colours Syrian. This explains how the National Hamster Club writes genetic codes


If you breed two Rex carriers (Rxrx) there is 25% chance of the pups will be Rex (rxrx). As Rex, rx, is a recessive gene this is why it written lower case the babies will need two of these genes to express this phenotype so they will be rxrx. Any dominant gene written with an uppercase letter I.e Rx (normal hair) a baby will only need one of these genes to express this trait they will never express the recessive trait. 50% chance of the pups will be Rex carriers (Rxrx) and 25% chance will not be Rex or Rex carriers (RxRx).

Thank you. Does a dominant gene like Satin gets carried also?

No, a dominant gene can never be carried it always shown. It overrules any recessive gene. Not to over complicate things If a hamster receives two different dominant genes for example for coat patterns - banded and dominant spot both of these phenotypes are shown so you will have a banded dominant spot Syrian. As they will get one dominant gene from each parents.

It only ever recessive genes which are carried as these get masked by a dominant gene so won’t be shown in the hamster. So you will need two carriers to produce offspring with this phenotype. However you won’t know which hamsters are carries and which are not as they will exhibit the dominant gene as that overrules any recessive gene.

I apologize for all the questions. I want to learn about hamster genetics.

To continue, what if you breed a hamster who is a "carrier," for example, "Rxrx," to another who doesn't carry that same recessive gene? Are the pups going to carry that recessive gene (genotype-wise)?

Another thing that is bugging me is how to write the phenotype for a hamster properly. Let's say a hamster is a Banded Golden Umbrous Rex Satin Long Hair (I've typed it in random order). Is there maybe a guide for how to write that?

Also, I like Strong Brew Hamstery, but some of her genetic codings are slightly more complicated. For example:

Yellow Umbrous Long Hair (Aa Cce Ee P- ToY U- ll)
Golden Long Hair (A- C- P- Rxrx ll)

If I understand what you are asking if you breed a normal hair (RxRx) with a carrier (Rxrx) - there a 50% chance of pups carrying the rex gene. This doesn’t mean that 50% of the pups in a litter will be carriers of rex - none may be carrier or they all could be carriers - it all depends on what gene they get from each parent and this is entirely random. However you won’t know who is a carrier of a recessive gene only future breeding will give you answers. The best way to work out inheritance is using a punnet grid (shown in the link I gave you in my first reply).


Unfortunately as I’m not a breeder - I’m not sure how to write genetic codes of hamsters and why each breeder may write them differently. So I can’t help with this sorry.
