Default Neptr

Nepter (or Neptr, as he's named from Adventure Time) is a Flesh Eared White hamster and was born on the 23/12/2021, making him 4 months old as of posting this. He is a little boy and I got him at the Southern Hamster Club during a show for 15.

Nepter has been a bit of an oddball since I got him. He lives in a DIY cage measuring 120cmx60cm. He will eat from my hand, but is otherwise very skittish. He initially would wake at about 10pm, however has since decided that minimising his contact with me is more ideal for him. He now wakes at about 4am and will go inactive/active throughout a three hour period.

He has bitten once whilst doing his first cage clean, and he did it hard enough to draw quite a bit of blood.

I will keep trying to tame him down, but I fear he may be one of them "ghost" hamsters. At least he'll look the part though, with his beautiful white coat!

He’s amazing Heidii, I love his colouring, what a cutie! Hopefully he won’t become a ghost hamster but I guess we never know. Our hamster has changed a lot in the months between 4-5, he’s still a very late riser, but much more chilled and relaxed in his surroundings and around us, fingers crossed it will be the same for Neptr.

I'll keep working with him. He seems to just not be bothered with people, at all. Never has been! My little rescue, Pico, seems more interested in me, despite all he really does is spin in circles.

Have you tried him with out of cage time in a large playpen or ideally, safe free roaming area like a hall?

Yes, I did. However, he does not like it AT ALL, regardless of the food enrichment/other enrichment. He's NEVER been motivated by food, and so when I do take him out, he'll just sit in his hide. I've waited for hours inside the play pen, but he refuses to even leave the hide.

Did you put a wheel in the play pen?

Yep! There was a wheel, hide, multichamber hide, a water dish, homemade food enrichments, etc.

He is absolutely gorgeous! Some hamsters are just shy (or dare I say it lazy?!) .

I've had some that just keep to themselves a lot or need coaxing out but they're often better once out of the cage. Our last Syrian didn't do much in the playpen either - until I put a wheel in it - he liked that. But only for a few minutes, then would just sit in a hide. However, what he did like was being on the sofa! Just rummaging around behind cushions and climbing the cushions and the back of the sofa, so that's how I had interaction with him. From there it was free roaming (once the living room was hamsterproofed). Even then he'd just find a corner to sit in sometimes! But did have a bit of a run around. He preferred the sofa I think.

What time do you feed him? I think the key to getting them out earlier is a set feeding time early in the evening with a bit of cage clanging noise as you do it. And putting a bit of fresh veg out with the food. They get in the habit of waking up earlier and coming out for the food (mainly the veg which they can smell) and that's a time you can get them into a tube or ball or some other transport receptacle for some out of cage time.

Keep persisting with the handtaming as once he's hand tame he could have some sofa time!

Also - he is still very young. They sometimes don't gain in confidence until they're a few months old. Just keep talking to him and have a feeding time routine and out of cage routine and he'll get to know you more and more.

He maybe a sleepyhead like our last Syrian! But feeding time was the time I'd get him out. They behave differently at different times of the evening too.

How do you know he doesn't come out till 4am?

I will keep going Getting bit felt like a draw back, especially as he did it hard enough to draw quite a bit of blood, but he does still wake up and just watch me curiously from his enclosure. I hope he becomes tame, as I'd love to have a strong bond with him.

Not sure if sofa time is something we'll be doing, as I own a ratter dog who is also particularly fond of sofa time. I'm sure each others scents will make both of them go wild, so might just stick with inside my room time.
