Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
Thank you Stanza! That bendy bridge is one that screws to the bars. And actually it still isn’t quite right - as Raffy demonstrated to me when he went down it - not quite enough space beyond it for him to comfortably get a footing and turn round! As the edge of the house is about 2.5 to 3” after the ramp. I couldn’t move the little shelf any further along or it wouldn’t have lined up with the Sputnik. I could move the bendy bridge further along the bars so there’s more space at the end of it where he walks off - but then it would be steeper as well as shorter. Anyway Raffy solved that one as he just nonchalantly hops onto it half way along from the house roof and doesn’t bother to go to the end of it and climb up.
He is using the roof run - I watched the video from the other night. But not as much as I thought he would. But then it’s only been a couple of days. He instead takes the easy route down the side of the cork log or up the side of the cork log which is directly opposite his house. He seems a bit perturbed by the slight gap between the tube and the Sputnik at one end. It’s the best you can do as they’re not designed to fit together and due to the angle of the Sputnik. Other hansters have never bothered and just stepped over it. But as I say it’s early days.
He really likes the little shelf though and sits on there chewing his hanging chew stick. He’s not like any Syrian I’ve had before - he ignores his coconut hide - unless I put food in it then he just gets the food and doesn’t bother to sit in it. Basically he is not a sitting still hamster! The only time he sits still is to have a wash and he seems to like doing that on the large shelf.
There is a very funny bit on the video from the other night so when I get round to it I’ll upload it on here.

Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
Now that you mention it. I've never seen Clive sitting inside a hide either, only his glass bon bon sand jar. He loves that thing. He likes to be up on a shelf.
I wonder if a small tube like a short Pringle tube leading from rat tube into the sputnik would help or take the top off the sputnik and place the tube on it but then its no longer a sputnik and more of a hammock.

Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
Another great idea Ria . I will still give him a few more days to adjust though rather than bother him by doing more things to the cage just yet. But yes sometimes you need to change something if it isn’t working.
It’s interesting his personality now he’s that bit older. He must be about 9 months now and is less whizzy in his cage and more grown up and confident . The way he casually hops onto that bendy bridge and doesn’t exactly walk up the side of the cork log - he just used it as a step! Ie jumps up onto it at the end then steps onto the shelf.
Right now he’s running on the saucer in the playpen and darting around in there. He loves that saucer! Mind you he loves all wheels. It makes a real racket. He runs on it so hard it walks across the floor and ends up banging on the side of the playpen or a hide or something else in there. If I move it he looks very affronted!

Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
Thank you I shall take a look. Although don't really need it so it would be an extravagance!
Raffy is now using the tunnel and sputniks so I'll leave them as they are. I started putting a few pumpkin seeds in them the odd day and he found those and it seems to have got him in the habit of using them.

Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
Sorry Ria I missed the bit about hyacinth tunnels as well. Have just ordered a couple - I really missed those. All our Syrians have loved those. Good for out of cage time too. And something else to add to Raffy's cage now he has more floor space in front of his house.

Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
The hyacinth and the seagrass tunnels are very popular here. Rory will only go back to his house via the seagrass tunnel, even if it means a longer way round.

Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
Raffy seems to be getting ready for winter now it's got darker and cooler at night. A big pile of substrate has appeared at the bars in front of the house - again no idea where he gets it from! I can only assume he tunnels under the house and pushes it out upwards. I'm guessing it's insulation but it might be he has a hoard under there.

Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
Raffy sounds ever so settled now. They do build some interesting constructions when it gets colder.

Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures
Yes he does seem settled since the changes - I think he still needs another week or so before it's all clockwork to him. He uses the tunnel and sputniks all the time and likes the shelf. Occasionally he's not quite sure which direction to go in when I open the cage to let him out. Like he heads for the back where the old tube was then remembers and comes to the front. I am sure I would be the same for two or three weeks if someone moved the furniture!
