A few more photos of Raffy's session in the playpen at the time the HOM photo was taken.

He continues to be incredibly active and gregarious. I feel quite lucky to have a hamster who wants to come out every night (tries to jump out of the door if you open it) rather than having to bribe them out!

We also have a nice interaction verbally - he knows my voice and comes out if he hears it near his cage (even during the day on one occasion) and comes and interacts if I speak to him. He still doesn't like being picked up - that is very slow progress. He will eat from my hand though (in the playpen).

He is a wonderful little character and I think is having a good life with us - just the same as all our other past hamsters have had.

He's given up inspecting every inch of the Trixie wheel now as he LOVES his flying saucer - and seems to enjoy making as much racket in it as possible (he hammers in it so it walks across the playpen and starts banging against the sides).

Aww, lovely photos. Raffy is a very lucky boy and enjoying a great life with you. I still think that given more time you will be able to pick him up.

Thanks Ria and Cloudy . Oh I can pick him up Ria - he doesn't like it and sits very tense as if he'll explode! And still flinches if a hand goes near. It would be much easier doing it on the sofa actually - I have to bend down a long way to do it in the playpen due to my dodgy knees not bending!

I maybe need to be doing it a bit more often. I should start giving him more sofa time as well.

He's produced another giant Fitch mountain behind the house, about 5" up the bars! I swear he must be manufacturing the Fitch as after I remove the huge piles (so they don't block the wheel) they keep reappearing!

Haha, had this vision of Raffy holding his breath while you pick him up. That's good though, that you can pick him up now.

I think some hamsters are never 100% comfortable with getting picked up because of their past experiences. Raffy was a child's pet and so was Clive who still prances about when i pick him up.

Lovely pictures of Raffy there having his fun playtime. It’s wonderful when a hamster reacts so positively to your voice. I used to love it when Maestro chose to put in an appearance if I called to him.
Great photo in HOM too.

Thank you Coco. Yes voice is so important isn't it. When they know you. And trust is important too. I know Raffy trusts me now or he wouldn't let me pick him up at all. And even though he accepts it he does look aggrieved that he has to accept it.

Yes Ria it's the early experience thing I'm sure. Moo never liked being picked up either - he was a year old when we got him - it was possible but it clearly bothered him a lot.

Raffy is making his feelings known after we were away for a week. Last night he was happy to be out in the playpen again.

Tonight he escaped the playpen - 3 times! I saw him sauntering across the carpet and thought - how did he get out? Luckily he wasn't that fast and walks into a tube if you put it in front of him so caught him and put him back.

A few minutes later the same thing! I double checked no toys were near the edge of the playpen and moved a couple even further in.

And then I heard this weird flump noise. Then again - and saw what he was doing. He climbed on a house roof some distance from the edge and hurled himself at the side of the playpen! Sometimes he missed, sometimes he'd grab the top edge as he flumped, and climb over!

Caught him again and rearranged everything in the playpen so he couldn't do that. He had a go then gave up and went on his wheel.

Then I see him sauntering along the carpet again! I have no idea how he got out that time but suspect he climbed the back of the wheel (the trixie wheel has a little "ledge" fastener).

He has got very ingenious! And probably not happy that he wasn't out of the cage for a week while we were away. I think I might have to hamsterproof the room so he can free roam a bit. I still can't pick him up when he's running around but he will walk into a tube - at the moment!

Te, he, he’s being a cheeky fella. They are very inquisitive little characters. I watched Hams have an attempt at the very same thing but he didn’t make it over the edge. Sounds like Raffy is more of a climber though Maybe he just wanted to check where you were . Great photos!

Wow that is very clever! I notice if you are away or busy then he tries to let you know he did not approve. Lol.
