I did play music one evening and he seemed to react to that and look happy so might do that more often as well.

I think that you are overthinking this.

Clive's still throwing himself about scent marking when he's out and i approach him with the intention of picking him up. Even when i start talking to him he responds physically by scent marking and jumping about.
Never saw this as anything neurological though and more as a behavioural response he may not even be able to control.
Like very shy people blushing when someone talks to them. Or a young child hiding behind the mother when someone talks to them.

I thought Clive would have outgrown this by now but it's almost like he's confident one day and back to the beginning the next. It doesn't take much to unnerve him either.

I think some hamsters aren't as robust mentally as others, naturally or affected by their past.

I also believe that everything will fall into place with time, acceptance and patience.

Oh I don't really think it's neurological - I was just a bit in tune to that after my experience with Pickle and his head swelling. It's a possibility but not likely - it's just reminding me - like bad memories!

I think it's more likely to be previous experiences but they do all have different personalities and genetic traits as well.

Our first hamster, Charlie, was a bit feral at first. It took 2 months to tame him in the bath tub. But he never bit. He did have cage rage at first and would run at you (his cage was too small so sussed that!). Raffy has a big cage and big playpen so it's not that. He just switches from sweet to bad tempered if your hand is anywhere near picking him up.

It's probably time and trust - unless his trust issues are too ingrained now.

You know what it's like. One day it will just Click and Raffy decides that this human can be trusted.

Hope so! I have heard of the odd syrian who was unhandleable after early life issues.

They said he was either 8 weeks or three months. (It varied). I suspect more than 3 months as they can't go to a home until they're six weeks and previous owners had him "a few weeks". He might be older of course! But his behaviour seems about right for 3 months. By the time he's a year old he may be a bit more mellow ha ha!

Lol, that's what i'm hoping for with Clive. The only time he sits still is when i carry him into a room he's not allowed in. He's so busy air sniffing then that he forgets to wriggle.

Newt was just as active and he was never a sitting still hamster. I could pick him up but he'd never sit for even a few seconds.

The only hamster i've ever had who would sit for a while was dwarf Edwina. She was incredibly nosy and would sit on my hand to get a better view.

I've never met a hamster who would just sit and cuddle but have read that they do exist, apparently.
