He seems back to normal tonight and climbed up my gloved hand. But is definitely in a different more grown up mode. Instead of pestering to come out tonight he has been having a mega dig between his house and the wheel. Digging digging digging - throwing substrate everywhere. A huge pile fell out of the cage. Then pulls it all back off the pile again. About half an hour of digging now. Normally he’s out on his wheel or pestering to come out. Got him out for a bit and he just wanted to dig the carpet in the corners of the playpen so put him back in the cage again and he carried on digging in the same area again .

Until now I’ve had no idea where he pees. Couldn’t smell anything. The potty is permanently tipped upside down in the house. Tonight I lifted the roof of his house to have a look and can smell something now but still can’t see anything.

It may be that I lifted his house roof while he was in it that started all this digging on the other side of the house - or just unrelated.

Cool Re: Raphael (Raffy's) Adventures

Raffy probably was younger than you first thought.

When i enquired about Rodney he was described as this nasty hamster who bit a child and attacked the mother. When i got there and jokingly asked to see the monster hamster i was totally amazed to find this tiny baby hamster who wasn't more than 10 weeks old, if that.

People buy a baby hamster for a young child who then immediately picks the hamster up to play with the new toy and gets bitten. Then the parents want rid of it asap and try to get their money back.

I think that Raffy came from this kind of circumstances as well and was never given the chance to settle in but was grabbed at from day one and consequently bit out of fear.

I still think that with time and your loving care he will be able to overcome this fear.

Thanks Ria. Still can’t pick him up. But he does walk on my gloved hand (to see where it goes at the top). Definitely doesn’t like being “grabbed” - ie picked up normally. I think it will take time but he may never like being held. Newt was a bit like that. Although I could pick him up without him objecting but he never stayed still long enough to be held. I was doing well regularly but a week’s holiday broke the routine.

He is such a digger! He reminds me more of Newt every day and now he’s bigger the cream colour is a bit richer so he looks even more like Newt. At least he is a healthy size now. I reckon he might have a bit more growing to do as well.

So I've sent for the Rodipet 31cm cork wheel for Raffy. It's just come back in stock. The 31cm is internal diameter so it will be big! Annoying as I wanted the 27cm one but that is still out of stock (and costs £9 less if available). That's 27cm internal diameter so would have been fine.

Anyway Raffy is definitely ready for a wheel upgrade. He still thunders in his Carolina Storm wheel at night, but it's not easy for him to run in. You can see the difference when he runs in the 28cm trixie wheel in the playpen - much smoother, faster and more streamlined.

But I wanted a silent wheel that fixes to the bars easily. So forked out for it - ouch.

Pip already has the 21cm version and Nugget had that one too - they wear well if plastikoted (unless of course Raffy decides to chew the cork!).

Feeling slightly grumpy about the limited options for silent wheels that attach to the bars these days. Especially with the limitations of the Savic Plaza cage. My go to used to be the silent runner, but I'm off it for various reasons. Got to like open wheels with smooth running surfaces.

Grumpy because for £10 ish I could have got another wood trixie wheel and done this .... Except that won't work on the Savic Plaza as it has plastic corner edge pieces in the way and the bars would probably pull away from the plastic edge pieces with the weight.

Yes . Also works in the Hamster Heaven and Mickey 2XL. Any cage with a solid barred top actually. So although I like the plaza, it has it's downsides with fixing wheels to the bars - side bars only really. I am of course regretting getting rid of the Barney! Especially now they're not available any more. For a gregarious hamster like Raffy it would have been ideal (and stopped him trying to leap out of the big front door on the Plaza every time it's open!).

They are still available second hand. Have seen them on Gumtree and the Alexander.

Same with the Alaska. Nice cage but flimsy. Wished the Hamster Heaven had the Alaska's height or at least one of them. They made the Hamster Heaven, Metro and Mickey 2XL but each one in the same height.

That's a thought. I don't like small doors but they would also stop Clive from trying to jump out the big door. He has actually managed to get past my hand while i was opening the door and jumped out before i managed to grab him. He is such a slippery hamster.
