Re: Hello Hammy
Thanks Ria, I think perhaps where I’ve not given him lots of deep substrate he’s just got used to not having it and he tends to hang out in his tunnels and hides when active at night.
Jacks wall sounds cute, how nice he’s found his own special spot to build a hide out and used the underneath of the shelf too, clever.
I was trying to get a photo of Hams shoebox nest at the weekend, but you just can’t see it clearly. It’s adorable, he’s built the sides right up to the top of the box and sleeps deeper down in the cosy opening he’s left himself probably the size of my scrunched up fist. Even the front is piled high. He must climb in and then pull the bedding in to close the door.

Haha, clever Hams! It's amazing what they can build. Hams sounds very cosy inside his nest.

Re: Hello Hammy
I know what you mean about their nests - they are clever aren't they? Our first hamster literally "wove" a nest in a small round house he had - the house was awful and got replaced eventually, but the nest was like a kind of round beehive thing with a hole in the middle he crawled into! It stood up on it's own when the house top was removed.
Now Raffy - definitely seems to be a gypsy - he still hasn't built a proper nest - I hope he does this winter as he'll need it!

Re: Hello Hammy
Hams has been out in his playpen tonight. He’s taken a real shine to the empty tissue box, I’m thinking I’m going to find a home for it in his cage.

Re: Hello Hammy
It will be interesting to see if it will still hold the same attraction for Hams.
I'm thinking of a hamster who kept climbing into my pot plants so i recreated a safe pot plant for him in his cage which he totally ignored.

I did a similar thing when it was hot with a really big mug but Hams completely ignored it too. It’s early days but I’ve been ruffling up the bedding in the bottom of the tissue box and it’s been pretty squashed down the last two nights I just thought it would be nice for him to have another place to sit that’s covered. I’ve left his coconut hide in his home for now but he never sits in it. I think it’s a bit small for him. His shoe box is still his main nest though.

Re: Hello Hammy
Oh yes, the more hides the better.
What i'm saying is, that hamsters don't always do what we expect them to.
They may happily use something in the playground and ignore the very same thing in their cage but not always.
I'm just curious to hear what Hams will do.
I've never seen Clive sit inside his coconut. He sits in front of it. The Robos use theirs and Rory as well but Rodney uses his as a store to keep goodies in.
