Haha, that's typical hamster behaviour. They hide things in their stash and out of sight.
First thing Gertie did yesterday after i put her back in her cage following a clean up was to drag her new Whimzee to the safety of her enclosed sand bath.
I leave millet in their cages at all times .because they only eat what they want.
Lovely photos of the gorgeous Hammy in his playpen.

Re: Hello Hammy
Hi all, Hams is now letting us pick him up!!!!! which I’m super happy about. I’m still using the jug carrier too as he can be rather wriggly. After I’ve gone to bed my OH has noticed him sitting out by his door more often, so he opened it up and he strolled straight into his hands last night. The playpen was not out, so he took Hams to the sofa and he sat watching as Hams excitedly strolled around the sofa for a bit
Added a couple of new photos of our beaut!

Re: Hello Hammy
That is wonderful! Hammy is comfortable with you and enjoys coming out. I can picture him by his door watching your OH and communicating he wants to go out telepathically. He is so cute.

Thanks Cloudy, we’ve been super patient to reach this point and it’s so worth it. I do wish he wasn’t quite such a late riser but it’s the weekend again so I’ll be staying up later to have more quality time with him. Another bit of free roaming tonight instead of the playpen. He gets so excited, it’s lovely to watch even if it will be about 11pm.

I can imagine. I go to bed early too. It is so cute how he enjoys his playpen.

Thanks Ria, he is a big fella, I was a bit concerned about his size so I weighed him and he’s very close to what the internet tells me is the top weight for a Syrian? I love watching him do his big long stretches when he wakes up he looks super long!
We brought him home on the 5th Jan, I didn’t ask how old he was so I guess around 6 weeks and we’ve had him 4 months so between 5.5 and 6 mths old.

I wouldn't listen to what the internet has to say about Syrians weight. They want all of us to be skinny, hamsters and humans.
It's always better for hamsters to be on the heavier side and to have some reserves because hamsters can lose weight very quickly when unwell.

Re: Hello Hammy
Hi all, it’s been ages since I’ve posted about Hams and in those months that have past he’s turned into a real character. I open his cage to have a tidy at around 8 / 8:30pm most evenings and he’ll come out of his bed to see me and give my hand a sniff. He then takes himself up to one of his shelves where he has a quick clean before coming back to the front of his cage to hop in his travel jug to the playpen. He comes out every night pretty much and loves to run about scenting as he goes, running through and climbing onto the selection of boxes I put out for him to play in, he’s great fun to watch.
I still don’t get to hold him very often he simply jumps out of my hands but he does let me stroke him whilst he’s out eating which I make the most of and he’s very relaxed about.
I recently brought a willow toy (pic attached) I did not realise how huge it was and my OH simply said what do you think he’s going to do with that but he really enjoys it! Climbs over it, chews it, if I hold it up he’ll grab it with both paws and chew it trying to push it around. It’s turned into a toy we play with together
