Just be sure not to bake any wood items with metal in them, which is generally going to be things like platforms and bendy bridges. Some wood houses and such do have metal too, the Trixie ones in particular I believe which isn't very safe for hamsters anyways as those can cause injury if the metal were ever exposed.

I freeze food, millet sprays, herbs etc for a week.
I freeze things like cork tunnels as well and put it in one of those reusable vegetable bags from the supermarket. My OH does the cooking and has bad eyesight so has mistaken a bag of Harry Hamster for mixed vegetables before.

You can bake wood at 100C for an hour.
Oh Ria, this made me chuckle too, Harry Hamster mix instead of mixed veggies

My new Degu shelves are here, going to pop them in the freezer as they have the hessian like covers, can the coconut hide be frozen too? Or will it become brittle do you think? I was thinking 48hrs for the shelves.

I have frozen both before without any issues. 48 hrs is fine. I think it's mainly food and pourous items like cork that could harbour bugs and their eggs.

Hams so made me laugh with the millet spray, he was like… wow, Yes please!!! I tied it up high so it would hang down and by morning chunks of the bottom section are now stashed in his hide. Guessing you only pop these in as an occasional treat?

A couple of more recent photos of Hams in his playpen. Ignore the tiny original wheel in the background, it’s now used as a hide in his playpen, turned on its side over another box. He seems to enjoy climbing on it.

LOL!! My photos are upside down??? Sorry. Tried to fix them, but they are still upside down, te, he… never mind

Hello. Glad he’s settling in well. The hamster heaven is fine if set up carefully. It might have been my cage with the Sputnik and tube leading to it . The large rat Sputnik are great. I hang it near the front just to the left of the door in the cage. Then tie a rat tube to the roof which goes at an angle across the roof with one end going into a Sputnik entrance and the other end sitting on a shelf at the back. It gives an extra roof run. I put some bedding in the rat Sputnik. Our first Syrian liked to climb out of it onto the open cage door (and go back into the cage via the Sputnik too - he didn’t like being lifted into the cage so I just let him walk into the Sputnik from my hands.

I often found him chilling in it at night and all our Syrians have used their rat sputniks. It’s just another hide basically - somewhere to go. That and the coconut huts are round and they seem to like round things!

The HH works best with the tubes and penthouse removed and just one shelf so you have room for a bigger wheel.

He could be quite happy in it - if you think he needs more space later you could upgrade him later but it’s easier to tame them in that cage sometimes.
