Shaun!
Yesterday, Friday 25th of march, we went to pick up our Syrian boy Shaun! This is his diary!
We drove through snowy weather for abit over one hour to get him in a town nearby. The breeder had no problem picking him up and showing me that he is very tame and she said he is such a sweet and calm boy. He got placed in the carrier we brought with us and we got his pedigree, some food and some chews that he is used to. On the ride home he sat in his carrier on my lap. He dug himself through mounds of shredded TP and paper substrate to the bottom of his carrier and fell asleep. I could feel his warmth through the carrier so he must have been quite cosy!
Wen we got home we had to wake him to get into his cage, he was scared. But after a while I got to pick him up and sat him down in his cage. To thank us for his new home he screetched at us a few times before he started exploring. Poor mite was still very scared and let us know it!
He ended up munching in his food dish before going to town on the cage bars for a while. I gently touched his nose each time he started to deter him, but he kept coming back to chew. After some time he got bored of our little game and went to bed.
He woke up while I was at work, and had been exploring and running around, climbing the bars of his cage and jumping down from his big platform so hubby had to put in some more TP and move some stuff around so he would not fall and hurt himself. I got a cute picture of him munching in his food dish.
When I got home he was still awake running up and down his ramp, digging tunnels in his substrate and being a very active little boy! He came to the bars to greet me and I feel very hopefull about that. I was tired from work and went to bed hearing him frolic around in his cage. When I got up this morning he had went to bed and atm he is still sleeping.
I only snapped one picture while he was exploring and took a little video of him in his food dish which I will be adding to his Instagram.

Re: Shaun!
Yay!! Congratulations to your new family member Shaun!
His set up looks lovely and he's a very lucky boy. Looking forward to see more of him, once he's settled into his new home.

Re: Shaun!
Thank you both so much!
We put together some pipes we bought at a hardware store today, hubby is completely into making his cage exciting which is very fun to watch. But I decided we would wait until he has settled before we put them in as to not scare and confuse him. Let him get used to his cage the way it is rn begore we change stuff. Or, its not as much changing the setup, but adding to it to make use of the space at the roof of his cage.
The pipes are pretty smooth tho, so we might have to glue some cork inside to give him some grip where it goes up/down.
I also put some hard boiled egg in a small dish for him for a nice dinner when he gets up later.
I will update you on the pipe situation and how he is settling. Rn I can hear some gnawing from the cage so he might be enjoying his stash inside one of his houses

Re: Shaun!
Figured I would show his full setup:

And the pipes we built, they are unused pvc plumbing pipes. 7,5cm in diameter

They will be cable tied onto the cage so he can walk from the top wooden shelf to the green shelf, and also he can choose to go down into his main floor with the split tube design.

Re: Shaun!
I think that you could put them in now because fixing it up with cable ties doesn't make too much noise.
He may not use them rightaway because he's probably still too short and may need to become more confident yet but they would also provide overhead cover which helps a hamster to feel safe.

Thanks! We will pop them in then and see what he does with them. The part that goes down will touch the substrate so I hope he will be able to reach although the tubes themself going up might be to long for him to be able to climb up them

Re: Shaun!
With the tubes added might need to change it up a bit, but time will tell!

Re: Shaun!
Yes, i wonder if the whole length could be a bit daunting.
Chesterspal did something very clever which i think would work for Shaun if your hubby has a 3" hole saw attachment and a drill press, ideally.
Stratigically placed entry/exit holes would give him added access points.
