Chesterspal did something very clever which i think would work for Shaun if your hubby has a 3" hole saw attachment and a drill press, ideally.
Stratigically placed entry/exit holes would give him added access points.

We might drill some small holes for better ventilation in the pipes but since they are far off the ground I think we need to be abit carefull so he wont climb out of them and fall. So we need to find a size for the holes that are big enough to add ventilation, but small enough so he wont try and get out of them and either get stuck or fall down.
We are planning adding more pipes to the bottom og his cage tho, and they will have big holes so he can dig straight into the substrate from within the pipes

Re: Shaun!
Shaun has moved into his pipes during the night, we can hear him munching from them and he seem to have moved some TP into them. He just emerged for a looong drink and he looks abit sweaty so we need to add some ventilation as mentioned. I did manage to sneak a pic before he ran straight into his pipes again

Re: Shaun!
Aww, he is adorable. How cute he has moved some tissue to the pipes. I love how hamsters rearrange their homes to their liking.

Yeah it so interesting to watch them make their home just to their liking, and I find it super facinating that such small animals can have such a range of personalities. None of my hamsters have been alike, they have all had their own little quirks and way of doing things. I am very much looking forward to getting to know Shaun. Right now he is too scared and scurries away, at the sight of us, but I am sure he will come to know us as his gentle giants

Re: Shaun!
Aww, Shaun is so cute!
Sleeping and nesting inside pipes can be a real problem. They really are only meant for running through them.
Even when ventilated, the environment they create from body heat, lack of air and moisture from pee, can lead to harmful bacteria very quickly and cause serious health issues.
I use transparent pipes inside a dwarf's cage but i sectioned them off by adding little shelves. He runs through them but if he'd sleep, hoard or nest in them, i'd replace them with something that's not enclosed.

Yeah we had a chat with his breeder aswell about the pipes and it looks like shaun will loose his pipes today. We really do want to make his home the healthiest it can be for him and him sleeping in there made us concerned. She also said it will make the taming process harder cause he will just run and hide in his tube when scared, which is what he does. We feel bad for giving him the tubes now, and will find a way to make use of them in a safer way for him.

Re: Shaun!
I think transparent, short sections of tubes can work because they're not dark inside.
Jim's run around the inside of his cage and he zooms through them which is fine.
As long as you replace the tubes with something else he can go in, like a grass or cardboard tunnel with entry/exit holes on the sides as well, he should be ok.
