Unhappy I think my hamster has an internal tumor…

I have been going to bed early in the past few days for school so i haven’t seen my hamster in 3 days. I went to go clean her cage an hour ago and her abdomin area is HUGE. (My hamster is a Syrian female who is 2 years old.) She has been a healthy weight her whole life so it is very scary to see how huge her abdomin is. I have noticed that she has just been suffering from normal effects of aging but this happened very quickly and i am very distraught.

I have been looking online and all of the websites say it’s most likely an internal problem. I would love to take her to the vet, but she is already old and i’m not sure if it is worth the money to attempt to save her if she would only live a little longer. (i would also like to note that i am concerned about money because our dog is getting a 1,000$ surgery in 2 weeks to get a tumor removed and to see if it’s cancer.) And i litterally hate to say that because i love her to pieces. I really don’t want her to suffer though, so i have thought about maybe i should get her put down at the vet??

I guess i just wanted to know how long do you think it will take for her to pass on naturally? (i would hate for her to suffer for a long time) Also i guess i just wanted some feedback from someone else.

Thank u if you reply

I might be absolutely useless in advice, but I’m really sorry this has happened and I totally understand.

I recently had a hamster pass away and thank you to everyone who responded to that. I don’t know what it was because it happened so quickly. She lost her appetite a bit, was drinking more. The day before she passed I noticed she had a limp and I felt bumps on the side but not an alarming size. She had been sleeping more but as she always slept I didn’t think this was unusual.

When she passed away her stomach had basically erupted, I don’t even know how it happened I’d put her back to bed after checking her in the morning, and by the afternoon she was huge and she was freezing. Her tummy was purplish in colour too it was awful to watch.

I thought it could be a tumour, or some people suggested pyometra (i think it’s called) which is an infection of the uterus and common.

To be honest I don’t know what happened, and it sounds similar to your situation. Mine passed very quickly, she was ill in the morning but not to the point I’d thought she’d pass away. That’s not to say it’s the same as yours.

I’d take her to the vets if you can, and ask them as if it is a tumour, they may say there is very little they could do anyway since hamsters are such small animals.

Not that it probably would’ve helped but when my hamster was ill I found out about hamster multivits and colloidal silver. I’d ordered some but it didn’t come until the day after she passed. Colloidal silver is a natural antibiotic that fight infection and the fact it’s natural means that it should be safe, I have seen lots of people say it’s saved their animals lives and when they’re in that state I think trying anything is better than nothing. I do need to emphasise that it has not been tested and you should go by what your vet says though.

I’m sorry I can’t be more help. Hope everything works out okay x

I'm sorry you're going through this with your hammie. What a worry. It may be because of her age that there isn't very much your vet can do to treat her but I would still take her to the vet if you can. They will be able to have a proper look at her and advise what they think is going on, what options you have and if they think she will be in pain or suffering and what they think will be best for her. But as her owner, you are in the best place to know that already. She may be withdrawn or be grumpier than normal. Look out for any changes to her normal routine or personality. It's tough to know what to do for the best sometimes but if you make that decision out of love, it will be the right one.

Any kind of abdominal swelling is serious - it could be anything from infection, to fluid build up (kidney and heart failure can cause that and so can cancer). The main thing is that I think she should be seen by a vet. I say that because if she is very swollen then something could burst and that be a very painful way for her to die. The vet will assess and may even suggest you have her pts. So sorry.

I can only second what Serendipity has said.
Please take her to a vet asap to save her from pain, even if it means to have her put to sleep.
