Unhappy What happened to our little girl? Help please

Hi. Our little girl just passed away yesterday. She was a 20 months old syrian hamster. We're wondering what made her die. She got so inactive like she's old more than 2 weeks ago. There was a reduction in her appetite, and she couldn't walk properly. It was like she is shaking like an old woman. We realized there is no poop in her cage, so we took her to a vet. The vet told us it's a kind of bacterial infection (maybe because of what she ate?) and he gave us some anti biotics. Our little girl got just a little better. She started eating (but just a small amount of her food) and we saw poops rarely. She also made some noise but I'm not sure if they really looked like coughs. Her body was also cooler than normal, and she lost some fur on her body (but some vets we visited told us it's normal! and also one of them told us it's a heart disease!) 2 days ago, we took her to vet again because she has came out from her nest and slept on it. The other vet said it's a lung infection and it's kinda severe. There was no discharge from her eyes or nose, and she actually gained weight during this time of inactivity, even though she didn't eat at all or she ate just a little. The vet told us to come back tomorrow for an x-ray, but she left us. My partner feels so guilty, he thinks when he was giving her some water (because she didn't drink at all) this could make an infection in her lungs. We're not sure if it was an infection or a tumor. Could you please help us?

Sometimes we never know the answer as to why they left and we have to accept it was their time. You did your very best and got her the medical care she needed when she needed it. It could have been a number of things and with hamsters being such small and frail creatures often we cannot heal them no matter how hard we try. 20 months is actually a very good age for a hamster so it must have been her time. I'm sorry you lost her but remember the good times and the lovely life you gave her. Run free at the bridge little one x

So sorry for your loss but as souffle already said, it was her time. You did your best and there was nothing you could have done to prevent her from leaving.

It is so very hard to say good bye but her happy memories will stay with you forever.

Maybe in time you will be able to give another little hamster a loving forever home and the life and love they so deserve and not always receive.

Your little girl was one of the lucky ones.

Usually with anything to do with lungs they'll be snezzing and ull notice them breathing more deeply. You did the right thing by taking her to the vets as most people dont bother! Im surprised that vet didn't give her an antibiotic shot! Your description sounds like an infection to me, really surprised the vet didn't do more.
Next time id go to an other vet if the animal looked sn acted as bad as u say i cant believe they basically did nothing!

I am so very sorry for your loss.

Hamsters can become our family so losing one is never easy, and from what you’ve said she was very much loved.

There is absolutely no point in blaming yourself or your partner, you took her to the vets and you tried to help her. The water, again you can’t blame yourself for at all! Even if it did anything to worsen her state, she would’ve needed to drink again to live. So I really wouldn’t beat yourself up over water.

At the end of the day, she has obviously lived a happy life and that’s what you have to remember. I hate seeing my energetic hamster turn so frail and vulnerable so I know how losing a hamster this way can make it so much harder, as you feel something you could’ve done would’ve saved them.

But I’m telling you know, you took her to the vets and you did everything in your power to help. It must’ve just been her time to go, and I’m sure she died happy to have been around her parents.

I hope you find some peace with her loss ❤️
