yes thanks for understanding my parents have been really frustrated with me for staying up late. i will absolutely try sleeping at 9:30 and waking at 6 but i'm just a bit afraid cause he wakes up at 2am and if i don't let him out at that time he might start being restless . if that doesn't work out well i might have to gently wake him up as u said . Thanks for your help i will try figuring out something .

Ok, just to say though if he wakes at 2am you don't have to get him out then. If his cage is big enough and he has a decent wheel , little sand bath and toys he should be able to amuse himself til you wake up in the morning. There is a thread on here called 'let's see your cages' which has helped me with redesigning our hamsters cage. Also Erin's animals you tube channel has a video of how to make simple toys from cardboard so you won't have to spend a fortune to fill the cage with toys. Scatter feeding them amuses them too and they like whimzee dog chews. If you are allowed to post a photo of your set up then lots of people on here can comment on how you could alter it so it is fun for your hamster to amuse himself whilst you sleep. Then in the morning you can see if he wants to come out for half hour when you get up if he is still usually awake then. He may still be awake inside his sleeping area so you could call him gently. You could save the treats for that time so he is more likely to associate that time with treat time. Let us know how you get on!

Gosh, I didn't mean for you to wake at 2am! Definitely don't do that - you need to sleep. I was suggesting in the morning around 6 as you say he doesn't go to bed until 7 or 8am

I have found with my (lovely fluffy male) syrian hamster, Tarak, that he soon knows when I feed him and reliably gets up to eat!

I also found that offering them play time as soon as they appear is a good way to interact with them. It may take a while for them to associate you offering a tunnel, box or mug for transport into the playnpen with fun play time but once they cotton on most of my hamsters have been eager to climb into the 'transport' and have a good old play whilst I watch them.

My first ever hamster, Horace (black eyed cream) used to wake when I got home from school ready for his feed and for his running round time on me and my bed!

Some hamsters just are late/early risers and while you can sometimes condition them to wake earlier/later by feeding/putting lights on, ultimately you have to respect their natural patterns.

My last hamster would only poke his head out between 10pm and 3am! He was most active between 3-5am so I got used to not really seeing him and when I did see him up and about at a reasonable time, took the opportunity to get him out.

This is the gamble with pets that are more noctournal.

If you really are struggling to both adapt to each others sleep patterns, perhaps it may be best to reconsider rehoming him and getting a better adapted pet?

However, also bare in mind that younger hamsters do tend to sleep more, especially as they settle in

I noticed this thread and was curious to see how you're doing.

I didn't read all the comments and I know you found a schedule that works for you, but I want to state anyway that going into owning a hamster you should've been aware that hamsters are nocturnal and sleep during the day and wake up at night.

My hamster has the same kind of schedule as yours, he wakes up at 2am, sleeps at 6-8am and gets up again for about an hour at around 12pm. When I first got him he was kind of all over the place because of the pet shops random times and I have myself wanting to adapt my hamsters sleeping schedule very gradually but never saw a point to it since I can stay up as late as I want.

Im assuming that as uv just brought him that hes a baby? Just a few weeks old? If so its completely normal.
As u no any baby animal including us sleeps lots and lots. Iv never had a hamster from a baby that hasn't slept for 15 / 20hrs or so. As long as hes active, eating and drinking dont worry! He'll get into his own routine as he gets older. Mines up at 5:30pm and is up though out the night having a couple of naps during that time
