Re: Rodney
Sorry to hear Rodney is showing his age. And yes they decide they are still up for activity - almost like a second breath - keep active as long as they can! I've found with our ageing Syrians (over two years) they are still pretty speedy on the flat floor - just not great at anything that isn't flat! Even when Charlie was two and a half and could hardly use his back legs, he used to be pretty speedy on the floor and kind of dragged his back legs behind him. He was my longest lived hamster so far - 2 years 8 months.

Re: Rodney
Thank you both. I'm the one with the issues and struggling with aging, not my own age, couldn't care less about that but the hamsters.
Makes me a touch unfair too because Rodney gets more free roaming time than the younger ones.
Also, when old boy Rory wants out, i'll catch a youngster so he can have the whole space for himself.
Got to get myself sorted. I love them all but must admit that i have a special, very strong bond with Rodney which isn't fair either.

Re: Rodney
Ria, do not be so hard on yourself. We do not choose our bonds, they just happen. It is very painful to see our little ones age. I can understand giving an aging hamster more attention as they are aging and you want to make sure every moment is special.

Re: Rodney
I weighed Rodney tonight and he's 174g which is his normal weight. There was never that much of him. So he hasn't lost weight which is good, he just feels a bit bonier.
He takes a bit longer to fully wake up and become sociable.
He has this habit of washing on top of his almost submerged house then goes around in circles like a dog trying to catch his tail. He is a bit dozier now and sometimes falls off which he did tonight while i was watching him. I burst out laughing and he wasn't amused. He looked at me chirping then stomped off into his house!
Silly as it sounds but i've always said that this hamster talks to me.

Re: Rodney
That is really a sign of intelligence to know you laughed at him. I love how he makes his feelings clear.

Re: Rodney
Oh dear. When hamsters start to show their age they age so quickly. It's awful.
Poor Rodney looks like an old man! He got up just now when he smelt his new, favourite nibble stick to eat some and then went back in his house for another sleep.
Once he's had a good wash he looks a bit more presentable.
He'll be 2 begin of July which isn't that long.

Re: Rodney
Rodney wanted out to freeroam twice last night! He's still pretty nifty on his feet but doesn't climb so much now which isn't a bad thing. He was quite a reckless hamster in his youth.
