Re: Introducing Merry
He's lovely! As for hamster brains. They have a habit of out witting us when least expected, lol.

Re: Introducing Merry
Merry is now a free-roaming hamster! I'd been getting him out in a play pen I'd made - but once I put him in it I realised it wasn't tall enough. But initially he hadn't noticed and only spent 5 minutes in there at a time before wanting to go back in his cage, so I thought I'd wait and see what he did before re-thinking the playpen idea. And then last night, after he tried to escape the play pen a couple of times, I decided to let him the third time.
I thought he'd be a bit overwhelmed by the space and want to go back in his cage after 5 minutes. But no, he had a great time running round the room, sniffing everything. I ended up having to put him back in his cage myself and then he looked very mournfully at me through the bars.

And despite being very motivated by treats when in his cage, he's not at all interested in them when out of it. Probably too many other things to investigate!

Re: Introducing Merry
Just look at that face! Merry could wrap anybody round his little paws. He's a lovely boy.

Re: Introducing Merry
These days Merry is a morning hamster. One morning he got up while I was working, I offered him up some free roaming time and he was out until about 10am!
Although he is stubborn: he was hiding under my desk drawers (I didn't know there was space under there until I had a hamster), so I got him out and offered him the chance to go back in his cage, but he refused. So I put him back on the floor, he went back under the desk drawers for five minutes and then wanted to go back in.
He also has me wrapped round his paws. A couple of times recently I have gone to go to bed and seen him at the front of his cage, looking cute, so I stayed up later and so he could run around. Although one of those times made me question that choice when he spent the first five minutes in a cardboard box. Because he doesn't have any of those in his cage...

Re: Introducing Merry
I’m not surprised Merry has you wrapped around his paws - and quite right too x

Re: Introducing Merry
Haha! That is so typical hamster. Everything has to happen on their terms so Merry decided when it was time to go back in his cage. I think hamsters are quite clever.

Re: Introducing Merry
Aww Merry is a very handsome hamster - and definitely has you wrapped around his paws lol. Very cute, curious and active.
Looking forward to reading more about Merry.

Re: Introducing Merry
I changed the wheel in Merry's cage, which is disgusting, so I could give it a proper wash. One night with the new one and it already smells of wee I think I might be changing and washing wheels quite often...

Yes but Merry pees on his wheel so you don't have to go looking for his pee spot.
