Re: Our Rory
Sometimes i'd really like to know what hamsters are thinking.
The door of his HH has been wide open for the last half hour but Rory won't come out of his coconut. He pokes his head out and just looks.
He does the same when he comes out of his house. Pokes his head out and just looks for absolute ages before he makes a move.
I don't think he's worried about coming out but he has this habit of sitting like a statue sometimes. Not that he freezes, its nothing like that.
Next morning update: the little monkey did come to the door asking to come out just as i got up to go to bed! Another very late night for me.

Yes, you haven't been on here for a while because after Thomas there was the music theme when my OH came up with names like Freddie, Ozzy and Bob (foster ham).
After Rory there was his lookalike Paddy who has been adopted and now there's goofy looking Rodney on the scene as well.

Re: Our Rory
Rory has gone crazy and i don't know what the cause is but have two guesses:
a) i moved his cage from his usual place next to Ozzy on the table to the floor under Edwina's table raised by the trolley dolly reason being that i wanted to watch and assess Frieda so swapped the two cages over.
b) that the scent of a woman drove him insane caused by the arrival of female Syrian Frieda sharing the same room.
Rory is normally a very lazy hamster who gets up way after midnight, spends half his waking hours just posing and staring into space accompanied by the odd stretch and yawn.
He does like to free roam when he's in the mood and that's when he is at his most active. He runs, plays and climbs quite happily. I can't coax him out of his cage but he will come to the door and climb onto my hand when he wants to come out.
Last night he went a bit crazy. First he free roamed for about two hours while i set up a new cage. I caught him and put him back in his cage after an hour which is the time he normally likes to spend out but he came straight back to the door and asked to come out so i helped him out again.
Normally when i put him back he'll have a snack or does a few rounds on his wheel then potters about but last night he wouldn't settle at all. He kept running around and started bar chewing. I've seen him doing that before but only briefly while i'm in the room but he stops when i leave and turn the light off to do some hamster stuff.
Last night it continued and my OH said that he was still frantic when he checked on him a few times during the night.
He was still like that in the morning so i took him out while i munched my toast but he started getting very stressed again when i put him back in. Rory finally went to bed around 09.45.
I checked him over and he seems fine physically. Did routine checks like wheel and water bottle and all working fine.
I hated seeing him so stressed and tried to think of a solution all day, bounced it off a couple of hamster people as well.
I have now moved Frieda into the bedroom, restricting access to my wardrobe but who needs clothes anyway, and have moved Rory's cage back to its usual place on the table.
I have just checked on him and he looked at me sleepily from his nest so i put the roof back on.
Poor little thing, i really wonder what upset him so much and hopefully he'll be happier tonight.

Re: Our Rory
I hope he settles down quickly, Ria. It's worrying when we see our hams not behaving as normal.

Re: Our Rory
Aw poor guy, it must have been a bit much for him having a move & the girls move in too, it's not always easy to tell what or how much something will unsettle a ham but he sounds as though he's more content now back in his usual spot.

Rory settled down to his usual self after i had moved his cage back to its original place on the table next to Ozzy.
I've apologised to him for the upheaval i had caused him.

Re: Our Rory
All the hamsters in this household seemed to have changed their habits and behaviours lately.
Rory used to be very lazy and spent a lot of time in his nest.
He used to get up around midnight and spent ages just staring into space then washed for another half hour before he started to show signs of wanting out of cage time.
Now he gets up between 20.00-21.00 and wants out to run around and play for as long as possible.
I think having female foster Syrians in the house kind of woke him up but the ladies have been adopted now and moved out.
