Re: Mocha's thread
I will claim a small success as Mocha has taken back to his house somewhat.
What makes me even happier is that he is now King of Burrows, as the new space in the back underneath the platform is his new underground tunnel kingdom. He made a couple entries that are well visible and the only tell for the rest is the noise of him working down there, as well as the whole top layer bumping up every once in a while. He seems well happy. He still loves the front view tunnel, I guess mainly because it is where he slept in the beginning and feels secure there. I don't think he'll sleep in his house, but under all the bedding from now on, which is the most natural thing for him anyway. His whimzee is securely stashed in the house, so he'll be back to munch on that every now and then.
Time to plan for the next project: A tunnel maze.

Re: Mocha's thread
It has been a few days where I haven't really seen Mocha. When I did, he was very very timid and shy all of a sudden, skittish with noises and movement like he was in the beginning, so I left him to settle further. I did start to wonder if that would be his new baseline, but this morning we had a cute encounter as I got up and he was heading to bed. He literally scrambled himself up onto the platform and his house to get as high as possible (never seen him do anything like it) and stood on his hind legs reaching up towards my face, sniffing and looking. It led to a few little ' snoots'. Nose to nose. It made me chuckle inside, he was being so sweet and out of nowhere. After that, he climbed onto my palm (also been a long while since he did that) and had some bedtime snacks to go. I'm well happy to have felt him that close to me again, hopefully, that will only continue from here.

Re: Mocha's thread
I love looking at and reading Mocha's thread. Everything about it is so beautiful. You two were made for each other.
Where do source the jute and sisal string? Do you buy it online? I know how to crochet but have never thought of crocheting hamster things. What a great idea though.

Thank you, that's very nice to know.
I actually got big packs of it in a very generic shop that stocks a bit of everything, and really cheap, like 1-4 euros per piece. I think it can be found mostly in building/gardening sections, but also sometimes with kitchen supplies. It was surprisingly easy to crochet with and it becomes very sturdy.
I hope you find some and make some creations, I would love to see it.

Re: Mocha's thread
A rainy Sunday led to some creativity, I managed to finish a wonky-looking hideout house for Mocha.
I did not have a good plan for this one, but I'll accept the outcome as fair. We'll see if he likes it next time he's out and about.
I am currently negotiating for a humongous glass tank that would be ideal for Mochas permanent enclosure. Thumbs held!

Re: Mocha's thread
A little sample of Mocha running in his wheel.
It is subtle but clear in the end. It's definitely a night noise I enjoy.

He has changed his routine somewhat which I am happy about.
He comes out a bit earlier in the evening, around 9 or 10 PM to have his dinner, goes away for a bit but comes back again to rummage around his kingdom.
It's really nice to be able to see and interact with him a few hours before my own bedtime.

Re: Mocha's thread
I couldn't agree with you more, the sound of the wheel is a best sound in the world I have difficulty sleeping when I don't hear it.
He sounds very happy with all of his new tunnels and kingdom. He's is such a cute guy with the bright eyes.

Same here.
I used to own rabbits when I was younger and they are so loud in comparison. Hamsters are so delicate and he kind of gets away with anything with me, haha. He is indeed a joy with his little oddities.

Re: Mocha's thread
I love that little crochet hide with the fancy roof. Do you use a pattern or chrochet free hand?

I looked for some inspiration but to be honest, there isn't that much around and they all look more or less the same to me. So I just winged it on this one.
I made a base as a normal flat circle, then crochet the middle part in rounds, only making the opening going back and forth until the edges for those rows, and for adding the roof I alternated with decreases until it was all together at the top. If I would make it again I would start from the top, think it's easier to make it look neat that way.
