Smile Adopting a Syrian!

Hi everyone!
So I already have 2 dwarf hamsters. But this week I'm finally going to be adopting a Syrian! I'm so excited!! I just wabted to see if there anything about Syrians I need to know, anything that's different from dwarfs? Also does anyone else find it hard to find toys and hides that are big enough for Syrians? Because I feel like everything is too small 😂
Thank you all x

Hi, congratulations. Yes you are not alone in your thinking, a lot of hamster specific toys/hides are too small for syrian hmasters, you could try looking at toys/hides for rats or even guinea pigs as these are often too small for guinea pigs but perfect for syrians.

Hello, good luck with your new syrian hamster. Syrian hamsters just simply require a bigger space then your small dwarf hamsters. Bigger toys for them are required as their body size is larger.

Good luck with your third hamster!

Hi! I also recently got a Syrian after only having had Russian dwarfs in the past, so I feel ya. Whenever I looked at houses or other things for my hamster, I imaged that if the item looked perfect for a dwarf, it would be too small for a Syrian. You can also make hideouts yourself. One of Jupiter's favourite hideout is a thick cardboard tube that was used for a carpet roll. But I imagine that big mailing tubes (for like posters) work too. I also went to various thrift stores. Sometimes they have animal stuff too (be sure to clean it tho!). Another thing I use has a hideout kind of thing is this piece of wood (not sure what the type is, but it's used for aquariums I believe) that, when placed upside down, provides a little shelter for Jupiter to hide under. Also keep in mind that they need a bigger wheel. Mine is 30cm. My cage is a 100cmx50cm tank and I don't think it should be much smaller than that. In the housing part of the forum I recently made a thread with pictures of my forest themed cage, if you're curious about the set-up.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mention a company on here by name re. board restrictions, but there's a German rodent specialist pet company which you will find that does fantastic bits and pieces for Syrian hamsters and they ship globally. They rhyme with 'Podi-jet'...
