So relatively positive sounds good to me. Either it's non malignant or it was malignant but enclosed in a sac and they got rid of it all possibly.

Ah! That's so annoying. Same happened to me. I missed the vet's call with Clarissa's result because i was at work and forgot to keep the phone on me.
Let's hope we find out soon.

Re: Pickle's Thread
The vet just called now actually - must be working late. The biopsy showed that it was a malignant scent gland tumour that had been removed but as enough tissue around it had been removed they felt it had been completely removed and wouldn't spread. So basically an enclosed tumour rather than one that would get in the blood stream and spread.
So vet says it was absolutely the right decision to remove it. Biopsy said it was either an adenocarcinoma or possibly a melanoma because there was some pigmentation. My gut feeling is it was the first as it was an internal lump.
Either way the only signs to look out for are if there is any regrowth in the same area, which could happen if any cells had been missed but they feel it had been completely removed so that is unlikely.
So no need to expect any other signs of ill health - only keep an eye to see that nothing grows back.
The important bit being that it was enclosed and completely removed. I asked her if it was more likely to spread if it was a melanoma and she said no because of it having all been removed but also there haven't been any proper studies in melanoma in cancers only in dogs - and there are different types - not all are aggressive and some are very slow growing.
Either way - he's had it removed.
So it's good news that it has been got rid of and that was my first instinct - lump - get it removed before it gets bigger.
Something I read said that scent gland tumours are almost always malignant so best to get them removed.

Re: Pickle's Thread
That is very good news from the vet. Your instinct was spot on and the operation was the right decision. What a relief.

Re: Pickle's Thread
I hope so! It's nice to think he can still potter on into old age rather than live with a growing tumour. Hamsters do get lumps - but with it being under his scent gland I thought it might be a tumour - having read scent gland tumours are nearly always malignant.

Re: Pickle's Thread
Pickle is doing really well - for a hamster who will be two next month! He is still quite active and fit and healthy. Strangely not all of his fur has grown back where it was shaved off. Some has and some hasn't so there are odd tufts and bald patches. I'm wondering if it's something to do with the lack of a scent gland there. Maybe it'll grow back eventually.
He can still climb up the sofa.
He has just been on holiday with us for a week. Decided to take him and the travel cage with us as not possible to have a pet sitter come to the house at the moment as we're still semi shielding (and no-one available).
As expected he took to it fine. And has settled again now we're back home. He is the least stressy hamster I've ever had.

Re: Pickle's Thread
Can't believe that Pickle is nearly two!
Glad to hear that he is well and enjoyed his holiday.
Do you just use a smaller cage as a travel cage and does he travel in this cage while you are driving?
I'm just wondering because next time i visit family i'll have to take Ozzy who is on daily medication. There is no way i'd trust my OH to draw up 0.5ml in a syringe while holding a magnifying glass.

Re: Pickle's Thread
I take him in his pet carrier on my knee with a blanket over the top of the pet carrier - he just went to sleep. It isn't really safe to leave them in a cage as they can get thrown if you have to brake. I do have a slightly smaller cage I've used as a holiday cage a few times. And take that separately - the base just sits in the bars. It only just fits a 10 to 11 inch wheel height wise but that's fine for a week. It's slightly smaller than the Duna Multy at about 67cm by 44cm but has a really good built in house at one end which frees up a lot of floorspace (similar to the long built in house in the alexander). I really like it. I don't think it's made any more - it's the Skyline Ted. Like a mini version of a barney or alexander cage. It only has two small doors on top but that's ok as the top is easy enough to lift off. Except Pickle then tried to jump out! And was confused as to why there wasn't a front door. But the layout was the same and he settled pretty quickly.
I actually use the house from the Ted in his Mickey 2XL so he still had the same house.
It's this one (but without the awful wire wheel).

The house fits a litter tray inside at one end as well. I first used it for our first hamster and occasionally as a play cage when doing things to the main cage. Maybe they'll start making it again when the pandemic is over.
A duna multy would probably be good as a holiday cage too. Although not quite as compact to fit in a car!
