Haha! That is so much like Henry who won't run in his wheel either when someone is watching and the lights are on. Sometimes he comes out of his house and stares at me like he is willing me to go away and when i don't he trotts off huffily back in his house.
They can be funny little creatures those Syrians.

WOW! Serendipity, I can't believe how much Pickle has grown and changed in the last 3 months, I've thoroughly enjoyed catching up with your cute and very adorable boy, he's looking radiant and love all the pics, he's a little explorer especially in all the sofa pics.

Thank you TL. Yes he has grown - he decided to come out last night and I thought gosh he’s a handful! So weighed him again and he’s now 219g! He’s a big boy. He is so lovely and tame out of the cage. In the cage it is very much- go away or sticking his head in the substrate so he thinks you can’t see him. They all have quirks and from the first moment he used to do the ostrich thing

An update on Pickle. I'll have some out-take photos of him to add soon. Since the photo was taken for the photo comp last month he had a bit of an adventure and a sleepover in the kitchen. Completely my fault. I can't believe I did it, but had him out on the sofa late one night while waiting for Moo's soaked food to cool down. I went to the kitchen to get Moo's food, put it in Moo's cage, closed up both cages, put the lights out and went to bed. Never again - a not to be repeated experience.

It wasn't till next morning when I woke up I remembered I had left Pickle on the sofa! The living room was searched thoroughly next morning but no sign of Pickle. I suspected he had gone into the kitchen as the door was open the night before. Searched under all the kitchen units with a torch but still no sign of him.

He was probably asleep behind one of the appliances. So decided to set a bucket trap that night in the kitchen and it worked a treat. Shortly after I turned the lights out and went to bed I heard a noise and there was Pickle in the bucket.

Whew. So we had a cuddle and a chat and popped him back in his cage. He was a little bit jumpy for a day or so but fine again now.

However he seems much more adventurous now and did a runner last night as well! Had him out on the sofa again. And he has really grown! I was trying to weigh him and the scales said 235g. I can't quite believe he is 235g so will check again another time.

Anyway he jumped off the sofa. Fine I can usually get him back in a tube but no he is older, bolder and more adventurous! We played cat and mouse for a while round the sofa, I turned my back for a few seconds to close the door to the kitchen and he was nowhere to be seen.

So I had a very late night trying to find him. He was very quiet and very well hidden wherever he was lol. Didn't find him. But I knew he was in the living room so I put his cage on the floor with the door open, a ramp up to it with a walnut on and a tube up to it with a piece of cheese. Turned the lights out and went to bed.

This is where my nightcam is absolutely brilliant! I sat in bed watching the cage on the camera and as usual he almost always starts to get active as soon as the lights out. Watched him climb into the cage and nipped downstairs and closed the cage door.

I'll see if I can retrieve the recording of him going back into the cage. Anyway he has had free roaming time loads of times in the living room but usually I know where he is. He has only had sofa time since lockdown - but it seems he is voting with his feet about sofa time now.

I had a boarding hamster in the run (an Alaska cage so quite safe) last night and nearly went to sleep leaving him there! That won't be going in the update email I send to owners. It's easily done but glad you got Pickle back!

OMG Serendipity, glad you caught him. I would have been besides myself but we all do silly things at times.
It sounds like he is chomping at the bit now he has sensed freedom beyond what he knew before. I must admit with my girls I always seemed to know where they where, but with Twinkle he is so silent and fast, it often takes me awhile to find him in the conservatory.

You topped that one Serendipity, left the hamster on the sofa, lol!!

Sounds like Pickle had a good night out.

I'd love to see that video clip of him going back in his cage.

I had had a very long tiring day so I'm blaming being half asleep! Here is the hamstercam video. I sat upstairs in bed watching the cage on my phone and as soon as I saw Pickle going in the cage I nipped downstairs and closed the cage.

He looks surprised to find one of his bendy bridges gone (I put it under the ladder so he could climb into the cage) and to find that tube sticking in his cage which isn't usually there

Fascinating to watch a hamster going back in his cage when they have such a bad reputation for trying to get out of it.
