Default Male or female, which is best?

I'm looking to adopt a Syrian hamster. Which sex is usually more docile and easy to handle? (I realise this is a massive generalisation).
Are there any sex specific health related things I should know or look out for when visiting potential hamsters?

A lot really does depend on the individual ham, some males can be calmer even a bit lazy so easier to handle but you could just as easily end up with a crazy one who loves to run around & not sit still & there's no real way to tell when they are very young quite how their character will develop.
When looking at young hams you just need to look for general signs of good health there aren't any gender specific health problems you're likely to see but as they get older with females there is the potential for pyometra not something you have to worry about with males.

I've had 2 females and both have been absolutely nuts! But both have been fine to handle, just very high energy and want to run all the time. Don't know if I just pick the crazy ones every time or if they are all like that :P

I've found that the males I've had have been laid back, playful and easier to tame.
With the females, taming took longer and crazy about their wheels. Twinkle was such hard work, but so worth it, she lived up to her nickname The Diva.

Males tend to be more laid back and females are more active.

Congratulations on your new hammy I have had three female hamsters, two Syrians and a Chinese. The Syrians have both been VERY active, one more than the other, and the Chinese was more laid back and would fall asleep on your lap. So although I would say females are more active based on experience with friends hamsters, it really is down to their individual personalities.

Good luck with your female.

My female syrian is very very active and great fun.

All three syrian males are easy going and chilled.

Hope you two have lots of fun together. Kashi loves new toys to explore and cardbozrd to chew!
