So sad for pet shop hammies
I really must stop going into our local pet shop. The chocolate syrian girl whomi fell in love with just after Christmas is still there.
She is in a tiny tank with a ceramic bowl for water and one for food. Her bedding is so scarce that she cannot hide so sleeps in the open.
There is a black and white girl who has been there just as long in the tank next to chocolat girlie and now Arun's three brothers who all share a tank.
I know you cant save them all but i cannot get her out of my mind. I really hope she has been sold by the time i go there again. Oh dear.
No real point to this post. Just wanted to share how i feel to people who understand.

Re: So sad for pet shop hammies
Going to visit her means...you know what if she's not sold in the near future while you have her on your mind
Going to visit her is a form of pre-adoption if there is such a thing?

Re: So sad for pet shop hammies
That's illegal, as stated by the animal welfare codes of practice for animals in pet shops ''Animals must be able to withdraw, where appropriate, to a quiet, dark and
well ventilated area within their enclosure to allow them to take sleep
breaks.''
I would report it, not sure who to thought.

Aren't chocolate coloured Syrian well sought after? Obviously the pet shops give them the minimum so you feel the need to buy all of their accessories and cages etc. It's shocking but that's how it is. Hamsters and other pets should be made less available in my opinion so only those who really want one will get them.

Re: So sad for pet shop hammies
There's a pet store near me who sell mass quantities of male Syrians, about 30 of them at least all sleeping on top of one another. There is no dark houses for them at all so they all sleep piled up out in the open. They have a water bowl in the center of the enclosure they are in. I cant support that store in any way!

The legislations may be different for the US though, but that's awful

At my local pet shop the staff take them hamsters home if they don't sell so if someone comes in to the shop and inquires about them the staff will bring them in to sell to the right people. They only have 1 on display at a time too. Shame most pet shops aren't this way.
The thing that bugs me is, those staff working in pet stores must surely have had to prove their interest in pets yet most are just ignorant to neglecting of pets that are on display. Does my head in
Cinnamon bear you should try and report them to your RSPCA animal standard equivalent. What's the worst that could happen

Re: So sad for pet shop hammies
The pet shops main concern is profit making unfortunately, the animals don't come first.

It's shocking. I've been hoping Ricky Gervais buys a pet store chain (he absolutely despises pet cruelty and is obviously a millionaire) so others can be put in the spotlight. Won't happen though
