I'm sure you will. It doesn't seem like it at the time but then it's amazing when suddenly they are your best pal and trust you How old is he? They get easily scared when they're still young.

How long have you had Freddy? 2 months you say...thats not long at all. If my hammie is coming out of her hiding place to see me after 2 months I will be happy. I have my little girl for a week today and seen very little of her...your Freddy is so much braver than my girl. I havent been able to pet her yet either and probably wont get to do that for a little while yet and who knows I might not even see her for a month or more apart from peeping out at me. These things take time so relax and enjoy each others company. All the tips and lists here are great and they will help you tame Freddy but it will happen at Freddys pace and your pace and over time you and Freddy will learn to trust each other...it will happen for you both it just takes time and lots of patience. I sit outside my hammies cage and see her peeping out at me and I try to see the world through her eyes and from her prospective. This helps me understand her and her needs a little better I think, and I very much enjoy imagining what she is thinking as I watch her. There is a whole lot of joy to be had from just relaxing and watching your hammie explore his world and a wonderful feeling too to be a part of that world even if for now its from a little distance. I look forward too to the day when I can pick up and pet my hammie but for now Im enjoying her as she is and giving her the oppertunity and space to trust. We havent even started a taming routine yet though I have put the scented tissue in with her to get her used of my scent. You are doing wonderfully well already to be able to pet Freddy. He feels your finger there on his back and knows its your finger so you are doing way better than me and my girl, as Ive not petted mine yet at all. Take your time and relax and make the taming routine fun for both you and Freddy. Not all hammies like to be cuddled and carried and if Freddy is one of these then you will grow to love other things you can do with Freddy but then again your Freddy could end up being the cuddliest hammie ever...just give him time and relax and enjoy the adventure that you and Freddie are on together. Its already started so have fun

Freddy was a baby from the pet shop when I received him, so after two months he is about 11-12 weeks old.

I suppose Freddy has started better than your hamster has (person above this post, forgot your username already XD, sorry). He has never been scared of my presence. One thing I have with him that I do enjoy is he comes when I clap my hands like a little fuzzy servant lol

I will update this thread as I start the new regime.

I did lol at the title of this thread, no hamster is evil. Unfortunately, you've gotten off too a bad start with Freddy but, this is changeable. Serendipity gave excellent advice and tips. Twinkle was a nightmare when I first got her and for a while I called her Vampire. But, by taking things slowly we now have a wonderful bond. Some hamsters take longer than others at trusting and connecting with but, you can do it.

Gopal (long haired chocolate syrian) has been with me almost two months now and will allow strokies whilst eating but has yet to feel happy taking food from me.

He will eat and wash whilst i am there and will often sit and gaze at me for ages listening to me telling him how lovely he is (awww).

I havent done more than two taming box sssions with him yet.

It sounds as though you have a bond with Freddie already (your fuzzy servant) lol. Keep up the good work. I will watch out for updates with interest.

Looking forward to your updates and hearing how you and Freddy progress and perhaps I will learn a few tricks from you along the way. My little one is about the same age as your Freddy. Our pet shop only sells them at 12 weeks and over .Enjoy yourself with Freddy and have fun

Maybe that is why your hamster is so shy? 12 weeks sounds rather old for a hamster to go to what should be its forever home.

Hopefully with all this advice Freddy should be simple to tame, I don't believe he has any behavioural issues, he just thinks I am food. I never treat tamed him to glove handling and after two quite aggressive attacks he is very confident being held with them, maybe this will make the taming process easier as it is similar to something he has already done.

Just another quick question, can Freddy come out in his ball between taming sessions? He really seems to enjoy coming out and I wouldn't like to leave him in lol.

My previous hamsters all went in their balls each night for a run around. The tame ones used to get handled and allowed to explore free range in a safe area and some of them loved to climb up and down stairs, under close observation.
