Default Syrian or Hybred?

Hi. Was wondering if Scarlet is a Syrian or a Hybred because I got her from a pet shop and they never say.

I think I'm right in saying Syrians are always just Syrians and not hybrids as they can't interbreed with the other hamster species - it's the Campbell's and winter white dwarf hams which are interbred and become "hybrid" hams.

Bertie is correct. Hybrid refers to the two "Russian" dwarf species, Campbells and Winter Whites. Although two different species they are similar enough to breed together and have created what we call a hybrid but is more often referred to by pet shops as Russian hamsters. This interbreeding is what leads to an increased risk of diabetes. Syrian hamsters are just one species and cannot be bred with another. There are many different colours available but they are all Syrians. Your hammy is a Syrian

Thanks. I just don't know because I got her from a pet shop and they said they "Had no idea what she was. Probably just a hybred.". Good to see she is a purebred.
