"My hubby had to hold me back from slapping her after scooping Twilight up" - I can imagine the headlines! When we chose a baby ham some while back he was dropped, poor thing landed on his back. The girl picked him up and he pooed on her hand and lap - anyway he did well, no damage.

i had a similar problem when i got my Chinese hamsters. P@H lady just dropped the hamster in the floor and then looked at me "just chose another one..." i wanted to kill her...
Hope she is doing fine
She's eating more than my guinea pigs... lol... and still refuses to use the fiddle sticks hut I got her. She's really starting to show her personality.
"just chose another one" yeah I'd be so pissed too.

She's great, and yes her "due date" is the 15th. She was acting alittle strange last night though. Made a big high nest (in the oppisate corner of her favorite sleeping spot) and when the second level got in her way of making it higher she went ballistic! Biting the cage bars, trying the bite the second level it really upset her. I gave her a chew stick thinking she just wanted to grind her teeth and she did chew for all of two seconds. And went back to the cage bars. She's never done this before. After a treat though she calmed down and went back to her wheel. I am sorry about Sandy Bear but I know she had a great little life with you.

I know I'm a mama tiger when it comes to my babies (both human and furry). I'm glad your hamster, like mine, had no damage.

Update: Twilight has been acting super strange the last couple of days. Not wanting to be touched, making a super big nest, and most strange of all.... NOT RUNNING ON HER WHEEL! She just doesn't want to leave her new nest (even though I have seen her nap in her old nest sometimes). Since its a day before her due date I'm gonna assume she had pups. I will start a post in breeding if she has titled "Twilights Pups" so look for that in the next couple of weeks.

LOL. Now that sounds very much like a Mama hammy taking care of business! For now, only feed and water her once a day, and stay away from the cage the rest of the time. Especially since she is still new in her home. Hamsters require a feeling of safety when they have pups. There are many folks here on the site who can attest to the fact that their new pregnant hammies were too young, or too stressed, and they culled the entire litter. However, there are others who did very nicely as new Mamas. So keep it simple and as quiet as you can for her and she may do well with the pups. For her diet, added to her hammy food, give her a bit of scrambled egg, a small bit of cooked chicken, baby food chicken and rice or chicken and vegetables (No onion or garlic in the ingredients!), a little cooked pasta and some cooked and cooled oatmeal. She would enjoy some raw broccoli, carrot, string bean and peas. Raw baby spinach is excellent for giving her iron. Switch on and off each day so she has variety. She could use the extra nutrition as she's caring for the babies. After your description of the Papa, I think this will be a lovely litter.

Twilights water bottle turned over and I had to do an emergency bedding change today. I was super worried I would disterb and possible pups but my worries where unfounded. Twilight had opened her nest and I was able to see that she had no babies. I am both disappointed (because they would have been beautiful) and soooo relieved neither of us was ready for pups and I forward to bonding closer with my fluffy hammy. Thank you all for your advice and support!

Just an FYI, hammies and baths don't mix, unless it's a sand bath
