Default Is there such a thing as a dwarf Syrian?

I am part of a general pet site, and someone just joined with a 'Dwarf Syrian'. I've never heard such a term...I hope its not link those dog breeds that they deliberately breed some to make them 'minis' (Because the amjority of them are plagued with illnesses from breeding runts). I asked her about them, but no response yet.

So is there such a thing?

No there isn't. Dwarfs and Syrians are totally different things ~ perhaps she means a small Syrian? Or maybe she meant to say a Dwarf AND a Syrian? There definitely isn't a type of hamster called a Dwarf Syrian though.

I have never heard of these myself so I suspect it is just another one of these people trying to get extra money for something 'unusual' They are likely runts and as you say should not be bred in case of health issues.

I've found a bit more. Her syrian was one in a litter of 4, and she was born with Growth Retardation Syndrome, making her a lot smaller than your average sYRIAN apparently.

Well I would say that all that means, is that he was the runt of the litter.. maybe. Ive had runts survive that have stayed tiny compared to the rest of the litter, but I've never badged them as suffering from a growth retardation syndrome (I'm pretty sure that there have been no genetic tests done on this ham to see whether it is a genetic problem

in my opinion, the dwarf syrian, is just a wee chap/chapess who never grew very much!
