He has a couple of great-great grandparents who were rex. Can it be carried for that long though without popping out in "intermediate" generations?

A recessive gene can and not shown be carried for tons of generations if the hamsters that carries it are never bred with other hamsters that carry it.

With the recessives, this is exactly why the surprises cross up J! Mollz rex Doodles were a real surprise to BVH, and come from the same line as the Dubeanies and Smarterones. With recessives they can be carried by subsequent generations until suddenly one parent passes it on, and it just so happens so does another - whammo - you have the recessive displayed!
