Default A couple of pics of casper

Hi all some of you may remember when I posted about Casper on Hamster forum. I got him from our P@H and he had the sneezes which developed into pneumonia and it was touch and go. He needed to see the vet twice he had the antibiotic jab the first time and the second time he again had the jab and oral antibiotics. He is a lovely boy. He was Black when I bought him and now he's going brown but still has black around his eye's it makes him look like he's wearing a bandit mask over them. He has a white stripe from chin to chest and 4 white paws. No idea what the proper name for this is.

aww sarahh - what a bundle of fluff casper is! He's lovely. Black hamsters often brown with age, and of course, being long haired can dilute the colour a little, making this a bit more obvious.

Self coloured hamsters often have a little white patch or patches on their tummy and chin (My Spud does too) and with Casper being so dark this can be quite obvious. Breeders for showing try to selective breed to try to reduce these white bits, but I quite like them, just like I like banded hamsters that dont have 'perfect' bands - it just makes them individuals doesn't it?

I bet with his little white stripe and socks he looks a bit like a very fluffy penguin!

He's really lovely Sarahh.
I think Casper is a great name, makes me think of Casper the friendly ghost and then he is black instead of white. Its the sort of name I like thinking up.

Hi Spud's mum thank you for letting me know what colour he is. I wish I was up on all these different colours. I knew what a couple of ours were others I didn't. I must admit I like the white bits too they are lovely. One of the babies that we are keeping has a white band that is broken up with black I agree with you it makes them individuals.

Hi Basia I must have been posting the same time as you. Sorry I missed your post. Thanks very much Basia Casper the friendly ghost I forgot about Casper that way till I named him. We have someone in another street who has a Labrador called Casper and I thought good name so I will use Casper for my hamster. Now I have Casper the friendly hamster hehe.

Hi Rellen Thanks hehe he's mine. I have a female version aswell she is mums and she is called lucy although she is still black at the moment. Lucy and Casper are the spitting image of each other though they have come from different breeder centres. As P@H uses one and the garden centre where we got Lucy uses another.

He looks great, and well done you for taking him in

The browning is quite natural in Black hamsters, and becomes more noticable as they age - especially LHs, where the sheer volume of hair tends to promote the effect; my Wesley is busy trying to grow herself a brown bum, as I type. You'll likely find the coat changes tone frequently.

They do have little white chin stripes, and often 'boots' - if you're breeding the holy grail is to try and remove this, and create a pure Black.

By all accounts it takes some doing!
