Default Why do yellows have a "reputation"???

I got my first Syrian (since childhood...so about 20+ years later!) at the start of this year....I wasn't even sure what his "official" colour was when I got him but I now believe he's a yellow. Talking to Holly and various other people, I'm starting to learn that yellows have a bit of a reputation for being a bit jumpy....I was just wondering if any of you can shed any more light on it for me so it'll help me understand my boy a little more....????

This is him - Custard (yellow, sweet - and a bit thick!). His coat's come through more since these photos:

Yellows are known for being rather vocal and rather temperamental - when judging hamsters you always tread carefully before getting a yellow out of a show pen - but this is certainly not always the case. My yellow boy Bruce is as daft as a brush. You could put your hand in his house and pull him out when he is fast asleep and he wouldn't bat an eyelid.

I've thought about trying him in a Pet class to see what the judges say but he's a bit jumpy...he's very sweet and has never even nibbled me (he was licking me last week) but he does have a tendency to leap about 3 feet straight up in the air if you move too quickly!

My daughters yellow boy Flump totally went against the yellow theory just like BVs Bruce, totally soft - but he continually licked me (and not just after I had been holding a girl - it was just all the time!) he's the only one I had that has been that obsessive about licking.

Her melanistic yellow Cookie though was the hardest hamster we ever have had to tame - she was just absolutely jumpy as anything - but never bit, and became as tame as all the others, though still could be jumpy. At a recent show she bit through Holly's bracelet and pouched a wooden bead - cue me turning her upside down, putting my fingers in her mouth and forcing her to 'hand it over' - so I think we can safely say she was quite tame eventually!

Im pinning my hopes that Shanty after some intensive handling will calm down as well - but she acts just like Cookie did at first!

I was quite sceptical at first - but am fast believing the 'yellow peril' theory

Custard is gorgeous though and has a very nice skirt - hey whack him in the main show - its a great way to jump in and find out what people think of him - but I judge him as lovely

It sounds like there's definitely some truth in the yellow peril theory then!

I've actually given Custard's alter ego a name now (C'stardo) that I use to address him (when he's being super-jumpy). I'm probably turning him into schizo-hamster!

My Honey is a great big softee (and was from the moment I met her - hence my impulse purchase). Her breeder told me she hadn't been handled a great deal but she loves me and wants out for cuddles every time I come in the room. No 'yellow perils' here.

I think Custard is a stunning hamster, what a gorgeous coat he has.

I think Custard (or C'stardo - if he's in a yellow mood) will be coming to a show then! I want to try showing my lovely Smarterone and Marteser babies so Custard can come along too. Now I just need to find a show that isn't more than a 2 hour drive away! The only one so far looks like the Champs at Reading!! I don't think that's the right place to start really. I'll keep looking....

my yellow girl amber was the only hamster ive brought home who walked round her cage screaming for the first 30 mins after getting her. once she was tame she was lovely but she always gave the impression of being a bit of a madam lol
