5 month old syrian died

i am new here and i wondered if anyone can help me. My 5 mnth old male syrian hamster died,he had a hard lump next to his stomach of which the vet said its not treatable...he died sunday night in my hands while i were talking to him...is there any way i could prevent this happening again? I also have a female syrian n shes a year old n shes healthy but i am thinking of getting another one cos i hate seeing a empty cage but dont want another hamster to die the same as my last one n so young too

I am sorry to hear about your loss. It is all the harder when they are so young.
I can't really say what the problem was but it sounds like he had some sort of agressive tumour. These can have several causes including viral and genetic and take some hamsters at a young age if it is in the breeding lines.
Adopting a hamster in rescue is a lovely and rewarding thing to do or maybe you could find a nearbye hobby breeder with healthy babies?
