a melanistic yellow is a hamster that shows both yellow and black - genetically it is a true yellow (ToTo for girls ToY for boys) and also is genetically black (aa for both sexes)
The undercoat is yellow and the top coat is heavily ticked with black - in shorthaired hamsters the coat sort of 'ripples' with black and yellow as the hamster moves, and in longhaired hamsters
(particularly males) it can be very striking as the yellow is glimpsed through the black

Ahh yes thanks - I've seen them before - beautiful! I've never heard of them being referred to as melanistic though. Are they known as "yellow-blacks" as well?
