Default Thandi update she's changed colour

Hi Everyone I have finally managed to get pics of one of the females we are keeping. I would like to introduce Thandi andd they are 6 weeks tommorow. Thandi and her brother are the same colour and the other 2 females are brown with white bands round the middle.

I would like to know if possible what sort of yellow Thandi is. Mum thought Melanistic yellow?

Thandi is a lovely friendly little girl she is in with her sister at the moment we have just separated the other sister as she is going to her new home tommorow. Mum is still deciding on a name for her one.
Thandi's front leg is slightly wrong because it has 3 joints instead of the 2 which means her leg bends inwards a bit which doesn't bother her as she uses the wheel and going in a ball no problem but I will watch as she gets older as her warking maybe a bit unbalanced and may need her nails cutting but am used to this as I had a 3 and a hlaf legged hamster once who needed his nails cutting. Thandi is a special girl.

Hope you like the pics

aww she is very pretty! I am not sure exactly what colour she is to be honest, but I dont think melanistic yellow. I had a melanistic yellow girl and she was dark compared to Thandi although she did darken with age, so maybe Thandie is mel. yellow after all! the other thing was that we could never properly catch her colour fully.

Here's some pics of our Cookie as a young girl - as she grew she became very much darker!

hope they help a little?

I can see what you mean sarahh about Thandie's greyish bits in one of those photos, but I really couldnt say with any certainty - she may be a yellow as these have darker ticking on the tips of the fur, but Im sure someone with more 'yellow colour knowledge will help (whatever colour she is she is a sweetie)

Did you know the genetic background? Could that help work out her colour?

She's lovely though.

What's a melanistic yellow by the way? I've never heard of it. Cookie is so cute and I can see the difference in her colour rather than a normal yellow, I assume it means sort of more black pigmentation?

She looks like a cream to me from the pics, although they're not very clear - but if she has cheek flashes she's definitely not.

a melanistic yellow is a hamster that shows both yellow and black - genetically it is a true yellow (ToTo for girls ToY for boys) and also is genetically black (aa for both sexes)

The undercoat is yellow and the top coat is heavily ticked with black - in shorthaired hamsters the coat sort of 'ripples' with black and yellow as the hamster moves, and in longhaired hamsters
(particularly males) it can be very striking as the yellow is glimpsed through the black
here is another pic of melanistic yellow - darker than the younger photos of Cookie

Ahh yes thanks - I've seen them before - beautiful! I've never heard of them being referred to as melanistic though. Are they known as "yellow-blacks" as well?
