New Hamster - Introducing new toys?
Hey! Sorry if I'm getting posting wrong, I'm new and not 100% sure how this works 😊 I got my new Syrian Hamster Cinnamon 3 days ago! I was just wondering how long I should wait to introduce some new toys? I ordered some stuff that came late - a hamster potty and a little rainbow bridge. He's still hiding in his house but I can hear him roaming about at night. Should I wait until he is more comfortable with his environment to introduce these new additions? I don't want him to become stressed out! Also is it okay to give him treats at this early stage or again should I wait until he settles in a bit more?
Thanks 😊

Re: New Hamster - Introducing new toys?
Congratulations on getting your hamster. You can put in the bridge and potty. The potty litter isn’t always safe to use, but you can use some of the substrate that is in the cage base. Syrian hamsters often use a corner to pee in. So put the potty in a corner. If he doesn’t pees somewhere else put the potty there and add some of the pee soaked substrate into the potty. The smell attracts them to keep going in the same place. As he is a young hamster and still settling in he may take a while to choose a pee area.
Treats are ok. They can help start him getting used to you. Talk to him so he gets to know your voice.
If you put some toilet paper up your sleeve for a while. Then tear it into strips and put them in the cage. This gets the hamster used to your scent.

Congratulations! I would add in the toys the next time you clean your cage. Don't worry if hamsters are avoiding certain toys its perfectly normal.

Re: New Hamster - Introducing new toys?
If your hamster isn't interested in plain wood, try crushing up some berries or another type of hamster safe fruit in some water and soak the wood toys in it, leave it 24 hours(ish), then leave it to dry. Hopefully, your hamster will enjoy chewing on flavoured wood toys other than pain ones!
