roborovoski spinning their wheel from outside? odd change

has anyone ever had their robo change their habits and start spinning their wheel from the outside? i have 2 elderly robos close to 2 years old(separate cages) and all of a sudden 1 of them the past few weeks has started to spin the wheel a few times from the outside then chews on 1 of the 4 entrances to the wheel then continues to spin it.. and occasionally gets on it for a few cycles then back off and repeats..

totally out of habit never used to do it and im confused by it.
