Hi. I made a post about Pico spinning the other day, as his behaviour had begun to change. I did notice he'd spend more time spinning than running on his wheel, but he was otherwise active and exploring his cage during the day, with very little spins.

I have never had an older hamster, and whilst I don't know Pico's age, I have never seen the "before they pass" signs. I noticed the behaviour change and made a post thinking maybe it was because of stress (or some other suggestions I got), but I didn't expect him to be this seemingly healthy up until he just wasn't? I know hamsters are prey animals and so therefore they pretend to be fine up until their not, but I thought I would've noticed something. Guess that's just beginner hamster carer thinking they'd catch on.

I am quite worried about him. I didn't see him yesterday, when his routine is extremely regular. I put some of his regular mix on his wheel, alongside a mealworm as they are his favourites. Normally, I could put an insect in his enclosure and he'd instantly wake up and come have a look. However, I checked all last night and this evening, but his seed mix is still there.

I really want to start scooping bedding out to try and see him, but I know you shouldn't really do that if he is just sleeping. How long should I wait before emptying his enclosure trying to find him? He's a Robo in a Detolf, so it would take a while to find him in there. I am really worried, and was going to start scooping out bedding tonight. Or should I wait till tomorrow? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I can't stop thinking about him.

I had this worry once with my robo. I did actually look for him as I was worried sick. It took me a whole hour to find him as I had to take almost everything out his cage. If it were me I would look for him because I cannot see you getting any sleep otherwise. My robo recovered after 5 minutes so it was not too stressful for him.

I would go looking for him now. If he's alive and well he'll come running out anyway to see what's going on and you won't need to go through the whole enclosure.
If he gets woken up there's no harm done. He'll get over it.

Hi Cloudy.

Pico has passed. He seems to have gone in his sleep. Not sure if it was age or stroke or what. I hope he had a good life. He was probably my favourite out of all my hamsters that I've had and rehomed. He had so much character. Really quite upset so not sure if I will keep talking on this thread. Thanks for all your advice for as long as I've had him.

I posted the same time as you did.
I'm so sorry for your loss. You did all you could and showed little Pico how wonderful a hamster life can be.

Heidii, I am so very sorry for your loss. I clearly remember you rescuing sweet Pico. In the short time you had him you gave him the best care possible. You did your best to upgrade his cage and provide a wonderful home. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Thanks guys. He has been buried and I've finished removing the bedding from his enclosure. I guess on the bright side another hamster gets to use his old home. I've never had a person I care for die, and I've never had an animal I care for die, so this is quite a new experience. It's like I stop crying but the moment I think about how there will never be another photo of him or video, or how I'll never turn around and see him in his cage watching me again, I just start crying all over again.
Thanks for your kind words, though. I really appreciate it.

How you are feeling is totally natural and understandable. Pico was such a special little hamster. I remember he used to watch you and things like that are just so precious. He was tiny but will leave a huge gap. In time the gap is not as painful. We are all here to support you.

It's truly awful when a hamster leaves us. We miss them so much and that won't change. We never stop missing them.

Your emotions are raw just now but in time your grief will ease and you will be able to think of Pico and all the happy memories he left you with.
