Default Mouse cages

Hi everyone,

Struggling a bit to find a suitable cage for some mice. I currently own a Ferplast Criceti 100 and a Savic Plaza and I have 3 questions:
1. Are either of these cages suitable? Is the bar spacing too wide?
2. What is the minimum cage size for mice? Most sources I can find seem to recommend tiny minimums!
3. What kind of stocking density is recommended for mice? How many could I keep in a 100x50x50cm cage?

Thank you!

Maybe a mouse forum would be better placed to answer these questions?

Hi, Ive kept mice for a few years now so will be able to answer your questions…

1. Bar sizing will depend on the age of your mice if they are babies and havent reached adult size their is a possibility they may squeeze through the 1cm bar spacing. When I kept my 6 week old mice in a ferplast mary I attached additional wire sheets to it to ensure it wouldnt possible squeeze through. The ferplast plaza in my opinion will be better and I have seen people have covered/or replaced the bars with clear acrylic

2. The Blue cross recommend a minimum of 80x50x50 when I adopted from them. Mice love to dig and create tunnels and also love to climb so the cage needs to be able to provide both. Mice love their cage to be cluttered - the busier the better.

3. Depends on the gender - Males you will only be able to keep one unless neutered. Females - I personally wouldn’t want to house more than 4 in a cage that size. However you can put more some people have kept up to 6 or more. However one thing to bare in mind the more mice you have in the cage the smellier it will get.

For mice, bar spacing ideally should be no wider than 6-8mm to prevent escapes, so double-check both cages for that. A minimum cage size of 80x50cm is usually recommended, so your 100x50x50cm setup sounds spacious! Generally, 2-5 mice are comfortable in a cage that size. Also, if you’re ever looking for pet-safe supplies, Canadian Pharmacy can be helpful for specific needs.
