Default Rabbit Cage Advice!

I’m hopefully posting this in the right section 🙏 sorry to bother hamster chats!

We got a rabbit over a week ago, such a lovely friendly little girl. We have a hutch with a solid base 5ft x 2ft but the problem is we have a small flat.

It only fits in the bathroom and we keep it open so she has free roam of the entire bathroom, but every time we open the door she tries to sprint out, and the only way I can let her have more space is close all bedroom and kitchen doors and just let her in the hallway. She keeps trying to chew wires too and I know you can get covers for them but we have SO MANY. And it’s not like clusters so we’d only need one or two, I’d say we’d need 15 covers minimum which isn’t practical.

I know she’s bored and I try and spend time with her but this isn’t fair. I want a cage that will fit in our room to spend time closer to us. I’ve looked online for a cage and the best for the price we can afford is 120cm BUT I know the cheaper and bigger option is play pens like dog pens.

So I found one I think I like it 9sqft total run space and adjustable shape so can fit in our room. But there’s no floor, what’s a suitable flooring? We only have carpet in the house aside from bathroom or kitchen which goes against the point of having her spend more time with us.

I need something cheapish, easy to clean but comfortable for the rabbit as well

I’m just lost as I don’t know whether it’s cheaper overall to get a smaller cage which I don’t want but practically is better, or get this play pen which is perfect size but has no floor so could end up costing for flooring. Also bigger would be better, as once spayed I want to potentially look to adopt another rabbit to keep her company in the future. Apparently it’s better after having them spayed.

Any advice?

This is the pen I’m considering:

This is the pen I’d love but I wish it wasn’t so tall and quite so big. In our room as a square it would fit longways but width wise I wouldn’t be able to sit in there:

I don't know anything about rabbits. Would they nibble flooring? I'd go for wood cut to size and then plastikote it. I think B&Q cuts to required size.

For hamsters kiddies ball pits are often used but i don't know if that kind of flooring which is like a fabric used for tents would be suitable for rabbits.

The one very important bit of advice I can give is don't skimp on height - the last thing you want is an escaped rabbit causing all sorts of destruction or getting injured. From what I've heard the minimum height to avoid a rabbit jumping over something like a playpen seems to be 3 feet, but if you can manage even higher that'd be even better.

Thank you for the reply 😊

It does say online wood (laminate) or carpet are both good and like you I thought about going somewhere like B&Q maybe they’ll have some off cut bits reduced? Laminate I think costs a lot though £30 a square metre some of them new and I don’t understand the carpet suggestion as surely they’d dig that to shreds?

Online it does suggest those jigsaw flooring for kids as well but they’re more expensive than you’d think. I looked on Amazon I’d need to spend minimum £30 and in still not sure it would cover the whole floor.

I thought of dog training pads but I think they’re flimsy and I’d have to replace them so could be a money pit.

Just don’t know what to use, every video on YouTube they use fleeces and things and it looks so clean, but as our rabbit is still litter training I need something non absorbent really or easy to clean.

The second link it a dog pen and it’s one ectually recommended for exactly the reason you say about, but it’s massive and our room is tiny, wish they had a smaller version of it really.

The first one as well I linked because it has a roof over the top but it seems a little cruel in my mind since surely then they can’t jump very high? But then again cages aren’t that high and people keep rabbits in them. If I let her out a lot I don’t see it as so bad.

How about good old cardboard until you figure something out?

I’m using it as flooring for now 😊 I think I’ve found some mats we can use I’ve just got to persuade my partner to allow them in the room next 😂

Some friends of ours had a rabbit and they had this cage in the living room on top of a piece of furniture behind the sofa. And they’d let the rabbit out for free roaming in the living room under supervision. It even learned a few tricks. That might help the rabbit become toilet trained so when it’s out it just plays a bit. Seems like a good compromise between a hutch and a playpen.

There’s a bigger one as well but expensive. I think maybe get the right cage so the rabbit enjoys the cage then supervised out of cage time.
