I usually say to anyone getting rats for the first time to get a trio, if they don't plan to have a huge mischief. That way you arent left with a lone rat if anything pops up.

My kits are quite boistrous atm, getting into the delightful teenage stage... I think Pelias will be tryign to challenge me a bit, fun fun!
I'm yet to have anything like that. My current 2 are the first ones I've had from kit, rest have been 6 months+. They're 7 months now and it's been a breeze if I'm honest.

Plenty of NFRS breeders to choose from except they're 1hr+ away from me and I don't drive

My alternative is to get a pair that need rehoming, quarantine, then intro. I don't know how many rats my cage can comfortably hold so I'll need to work that out. I think 8 is the absolute limit but probably wouldn't get anymore than 5 or 6.

I intend to keep on with the rats if I'm honest which is why I only got the 2. However with COVID, I wish I'd got a third

Amity I've finished making my mix. I've attached a pic so you (and anyone else) can see what your mix could look like. It sounds all complicated and scary but essentially this is it...

I did get grabbed with teeth - nothing major, no broken skin and you'd honestly think the marks were just tiny scratches if you did see them but they're really not obvious at all.

I could probably have quite a few more rats in this cage, but for me I'd probably stop at 5 rats especially with very active rats. I believe it has slightly less cubic feet than a double critter nation, but in the US it can be found in some cases for roughly the same cost as a single critter nation so it really is a much better value in terms of space. I think it's also a lot lighter in terms of weight than even a single critter nation though which can be beneficial as well.

When Rosie/Bloom have a nibble, what are you doing? Giving food? stroking? Holding? Picking them up? Is there a common factor?

There doesn't seem to be much of a common factor that I'm seeing beyond a hand being in the cage which obviously they're going to have to just get used to. Bloom really doesn't seem to have the same issue - her nibbling is easily & quickly corrected.

Ah ok then. Just continue doing what you're doing 😊

You said you were going to try and make hammocks for them sometime, well when you do, make sure there's 2 exits or they'll make another one like my two have

Two exits per hammock will definitely be a priority. I'd rather not encourage them to chew fabric(though nibbling and probably some small holes too seem likely enough)!

It probably isn't the most exciting update, but I got to try boiled egg with Rosie & Bloom today(ideally would've given it much earlier of course). They were incredibly enthusiastic once they got past the initial unsure of something new stage - Bloom admittedly probably got most

The only negative thing I can really say about boiled egg is that it does fill a room with a smell I'd rather not have. However, with how much the rats enjoyed it and how healthy it is as an occasional extra I can tolerate the smell.

Consider yourself lucky ☺️ mine won't touch egg, chicken, wet dog food or tuna. Salmon and cod are hit and miss. White fish is amazing. So I'm at a loss. plant based protein like oats, lentils and soya beans are a hit though and they prefer it so 🤷*♀️

I'm definitely glad that these two seem so easy to convince into trying new things so far. It also seemed to help give Bloom some extra confidence & trust with me holding the bowl most of the time - she's getting much better in general but loud noises and sudden movements can still make her be jumpy or run away a bit but she easily comes back a lot of the time!
