Re: Rosie & Bloom
They haven't been able to try egg yet as I ended up sleeping in a bit but I'm sure it'll be well received!
I don't have cage setup pics at the moment. While it's nothing too crazy and there's not much in the cage I do want to get them more used to being handled for the moment. I'll probably post setup pics once they're more tame and have a better setup.
I think for enrichment one thing I've been intending to try is wrapping up bits of food in pieces of paper bag - mostly because I have random bits in a drawer that need using but if they have fun with it I'd be happy. There are definitely ideas floating around in my brain already!

Re: Rosie & Bloom
Egg carton boxes are good to put things in. Also cat danglers or anything cat like dangly they will enjoy

Re: Rosie & Bloom
I might try hanging rat sized portions or at least a part of their portions of safe herbs & leafy greens with DIY paper rope(easily twisted out of paper bag material or kraft paper).
I do plan on getting at least one sputnik but I'll probably wait to add it to the cage until the rats are more tame once I have it. I know I could order one online but I'll be able to have some control over the color buying it in store from Pet Supermarket here in the US - plus they're much cheaper there at 7.99 USD compared to most other places charging ~15 USD, so unless I want a really specific color not available in store I'll stick with buying them that way once I do start buying any!
I also have a cheap plastic Halloween bucket that in theory would make a decent hanging bed or small hanging dig box, but that might get reserved for out of cage use or at least until my pair is more tame as well.

How are thye getting on? Don't worry about to much in cage at this stage, remember you want them to play and interract with you, if the cage is more interesting than you at this stage then taming will be slower.

Oh yes don't go nuts in the cage. I was thinking more along the lines of things to break falls. (Should have made that more clear). Basic flat hammocks. I used pillow cases, poked holes in the corners and attached with string. Also make sure the substrate in the cage base is deep. This will also cushion falls.
Re the egg box, my one rat worked out how to open it! Wasn't very enriching after that 😅

Mine have some cheap Halloween buckets in their cage lol. Normally use it for stashing their goodies.
Forgot to mention. This may help with taming. An old t-shirt that you have worn for a day or 2 (no sprays or anything on it) or carry around tissue to get your scent then put it in the cage. Done it for all of mine and seems to work

Re: Rosie & Bloom
I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure Rosie weighs more than Bloom. Once I'm able to get my hands on a kitchen scale I'll know their weights for sure though.
I still have to give them some boiled egg as it didn't end up happening yesterday(generally bad health day, not anything too serious but it did interfere with things). I did manage to get in a bit of handling though - mostly with Rosie who seems to have taken to grabbing fingers a bit hard so I'm still working on that. Bloom seems to be getting even more confident too but I still have a lot more work to do for her to be much more tame.
Hopefully I'll be able to find more plastic buckets, I'm not too sure if Walmart here has started putting out Easter things as I haven't been out in a while. I'm sure I'll find something beyond some basic things I'll be picking up anyways.

Re: Rosie & Bloom
Just caught up - they are lovely Amity. Good to see all the great advice and that they seem to be settling in so well. I'm sure they will be great companions

When you say grab, do you mean with paws or teeth because as kits they will pull at you to investigate and also part of grooming.
As mentioned before, if they get too rough or persistant, letting out a squeak can help.
Last light Pelias got a bit over excited while I was stroking his brother and bit at my fingers for attention. I let a squeak out and he quickly understood and stopped

Funny you should say that, Ink did the same to me last night while I was stroking her sister.
Unusual for Ink as she's like Isamu's Eddie (rat with lack of confidence vid). She is a lot better now though. However of I try bringing her out for 1-2-1 she gets so stressed and doesn't settle so I may have problems if her sister passes before she does. I'm planning on getting a few more does this year though to see if I can integrate them so it's not a mad rush when I'm down to 1. (COVID depending).

Re: Rosie & Bloom
I really struggled to get kits last year, many of my breeder friends stopped as didnt want to be overwhelmed with kits from people havign to cancel from travel restrictions or isolating etc.
The breeder ive found is actually 6 mins away and is on a break now until Easter time which is when I'd like a top up. I tend to try do 6 month gaps to spread ages out.. I certainly do not want a repeat of the situation I got into last year.
I usually say to anyone getting rats for the first time to get a trio, if they don't plan to have a huge mischief. That way you arent left with a lone rat if anything pops up.
My kits are quite boistrous atm, getting into the delightful teenage stage... I think Pelias will be tryign to challenge me a bit, fun fun!
