Ive had some really twisted, thick old man nails in the past to try do. I find the back feet easier, you'll find your own method but the boob squish is my preferred lol
Can second the squish, works on guinea pigs too.

Have you found though that one rats nails stay nice and short but their cage mates could be like talons?

As I was preparing veggies this morning I thought of Rosie and Bloom. Here's the portion size for 1 rat compared to 1 guinea pig and 1 hamster (in my house anyway).

(Top left is rat, right is ham, bottom is pig)

Good to know it works for guinea pigs as well, not sure I'd have them any time soon but perhaps in the future. With the room laid out as it is now I wouldn't really have a decent spot for a proper sized enclosure for them unfortunately - although I'm pretty tempted to rearrange furniture and see if I could make space since I'll have to move everything anyways for new flooring whenever that ends up needing to get done!

Although to be fair I don't live in my own home so I'd also have to get permission anyways. I don't know that those I live with would be too thrilled for me to get even more pets so soon even if I could find space for a proper enclosure and build one

I'm sure if I keep letting myself go down this path I could fully logic my way into a list of reasons why it would be perfectly reasonable to get guinea pigs too, but for the time being I'll just have to stop.

Ideally you need 12sq ft for 2 guinea pigs although bigger is better. I have 4, 2 sows and 2 boars, (see my piggies thread for more) and I have 2 12sq ft c&c cages stacked. If you have a garden you could have a hutch and put it in a shed during cooler months. But be warned they go through a lot of hay!

I will add c&c cages are probably one of the best to get for pigs however you mention you have a cat do I'd make a secure lid and make sure your door is closed so your cat never goes in the room where you keep them. Stress isn't good for any rodent but especially pigs and rabbits. Prey/predator type thing always end bad even if you have a docile cat. But I'm sure you're aware of this

I have seen your piggies Engel and they are very cute!

I do keep a closed door with all prey animals(hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, etc - something I've posted about on the forum actually but thanks for mentioning since not everyone knows) because even if the cats tend to be relatively good with humans they are still cats at the end of the day. Even the dog is banned and that is how it will stay. It absolutely horrifies me seeing predatory animals anywhere near prey animals too if I'm being honest. I would still want a secure lid anyways just for peace of mind!

I know in the US there are people who quote something like 7 or 7.5 square feet for a pair of guinea pigs with 10+ being better for males. I personally don't really agree with this number though and could definitely see them making good use of a much larger enclosure, c&c or otherwise. I know we don't really tend to have cages in the US that meet that fairly small number let alone larger though so DIY is almost guaranteed - even cages that are 8 square feet roughly(fairly small and not what I'd want long term) tend to have annoyingly small doors or other issues.

I definitely expect to go through lots of hay if I do get any guinea pigs, and of course the fresh veggies would be eaten faster. I'd have to refresh my memory on diet since it has been a while since I've gone over that thoroughly but I do remember a strong emphasis on leafy greens in particular.

10.5sq is the preferred minimum for 2 sows
12sq is preferred minimum for 2 boars
The 8sq is the bare bare minimum. Only good for 1 pig. (Only have 1 pig in a cage if it's next to another cage allowing interaction. I had to do this when I realised I had boar and sow)

Good staple is what I showed in the fresh food photo above. Be careful with certain veggies as it's high calcium which commonly lead to stones. I could go on forever about pigs but this thread is a Rosie and Bloom thread. If you want any more info on pigs just private message me

Hopefully the girls will be getting to try some boiled egg before the day is over, I'll definitely post more later about whether they actually eat it or not. I do still plan on getting the Applaws cat food options at least though just for easier storage & convenience whenever possible.

ETA the egg is going to be done in the morning now I believe - definitely tomorrow though no matter what.

Prepare for even stinker poops!

You haven't posted your set up yet. I know you have the xeno 3. But if you post a photo, we can suggest cheap enrichment ideas. Rats don't care if you spend $0 or $100, so it doesn't need to be fancy stuff

Remember everyone starts somewhere, so I won't judge a bare cage (honestly you should have seen mine! ).

I have yet to meet a rat that didnt love some boiled egg!!

How are thye getting on? Don't worry about to much in cage at this stage, remember you want them to play and interract with you, if the cage is more interesting than you at this stage then taming will be slower.
