Congrats on your piggies! So cute and I am excited to see baby pictures if Oreo is pregnant. I had a guinea pig called Oreo as well! I’ve currently got 1 called Pemba, since Oreo passed away. I know it’s not ideal he’s on his own but I’m not allowed anymore piggies. He lives in a 2x6 C&C at my dads and I can’t remember the name of his other cage at my mums but it’s about 140x80.

Also I think neutering is an excellent idea for Chunk and it does seem to be quite common in guinea pigs now. I’ve never had any neutered personally, but make sure you have a good guinea pig vet.

I’m sure you have plenty of treats too, but my guineas have all been obsessed with the Oxbow rewards apple and banana (you can get them on Amazon). Anyway I look forward to hearing more about Chunk and Oreo

If Oreo has any pups I'll keep everyone updated with pics too must be a popular name, Oreo. Was she black and white too by any chance??

Sorry to hear that. Are you able to foster from a rescue to keep Pemba company, then when his time comes take the foster back?

As Oreo is possibly pregnant i want to make sure she's getting as much grass hay as possible. This will ensure that any pups she has are growing steadily and won't be too big for her to birth. At the same time I don't want to be filling her with fillers that are in pellets and biscuits as I want her to be as healthy as she can be.

Her current diet is unlimited meadow/Timothy hay. 1tbsp of grain free Pellets (science selective) and 1 cup of veggies (today's veggies: peppers, coriander, carrot tops- green bits, celery, cucumber and romaine lettuce). She is getting a bit more pepper for vit c which won't hurt her if she isn't pregnant. Not feeding any alfalfa until any pups are born as if I do before hand it can make pups big. Also added calcium could cause problems if she isn't pregnant.

Chunky is still getting unlimited hay. Getting 1tbsp of pellets. Still getting greens but not as much pepper as Oreo. He doesn't seem to enjoy pepper that much so I've got to find something else with vit c that he likes.

I weighed them yesterday as I have almost had them a week. Chunk is now 407grams (gained 72g). Oreo is 545g (gained 64g).

As you can see chunk is a lot smaller than Oreo which is unusual as males are typically bigger. However as long as they continue to grow and thrive I neednt worry

Mine was actually a chocolate agouti with a ginger band (more of a double chocolate Oreo). Pemba was actually meant to be a foster to keep Oreo company, but I couldn’t bring myself to give him up after Oreo passed.

Sounds like a good diet. I believe young guinea pigs can have unlimited pellets actually and they also have a fair bit of vitamin C added. I feed Burgess, not the best, but my piggies would never touch anything else and Pemba gets 1/4 cup in the evening and 50g fresh veggies every morning. Have you tried every colour of pepper? I know mine have never liked green as much as red/orange/yellow. I think kale and spinach also have high vitamin C content, but spinach should be fed in moderation. You can also feed broccoli, Savoy cabbage, trimmed green beans and Pemba loves mint (apparently most don’t). If you wanted to try a more natural treat, flaked peas seem to be universally loved and are good for taming (e.g. for the pups) or maybe a bit of fruit?

Finally I just thought I’d attach this link to a very comprehensive guinea pig safe food list so you can find some new veggies for Chunk. It’s been very useful to me over the years and actually has suggestions for how often each should be fed.

The weights shouldn’t be an issue, if Oreo is pregnant then it’s probably not a surprise if she weighs more and Chunk will probably catch up. Healthy males can weigh 0.9-1.3kg on average (you can see if they actually look over or underweight). Pemba weighs in at 1.3kg but looks healthy and my lightest was Toffee who weighed about 1kg. As Oreo got older he dropped from 1.2kg to about 800g but he had a lot of health issues and could never put the weight back on.

Ah ok.

That's what it says in the bag but on the pig forum they recommend 1 tbsp (6g) pellets per pig, per day. Pellets contain fillers and bulkers so pig remains full and can also but on a lot of excess weight through eating too much pellets. Hence when the vet says your piggie is fat, you drop the amount of pellets, not hay or veggies. Also pellets contain high amounts of calcium which are linked to kidney/bladder stones. So you don't want to be overdoing it.

Yes I've tried all colours of pepper. Doesn't kale/cabbage contain a lot of calcium? Ok for once or twice a week but I'd worry about everyday. That list is very good I'll bookmark that.

The 'best' food depends on you and your pig. When Oreo and Chunk came to me they were on a muesli mix with lots of seeds and grains, something which they're not designed to eat. I was going to feed Burgess but couldn't find anywhere in town that stocked it. My choice was:
- science selective normal (mainly alfalfa based)
- science selective grain free (Timothy based)
- pets at home nuggets (tend to be low quality and wouldn't touch with a barge pole)
- muesli mix

Using the chart on pig forum I came to the conclusion that science selective grain free would be the best of my options. I can get 1.5kg for £5.29 which will last 2 piggies About 4 months which isn't too bad

I've only tried mine with coriander. I grow thyme, basil and mint too so may try some of that. I'll have a little think on what else he can have.

Totally agree with you regarding weight. They're still growing so I don't know how big they'll be. I'm not sure if chunk will remain on the smaller side for a male because he is so small for his age. I've looked at a lot of charts and Oreo is within range for a 10 week old sow but Chunk is weighing the same as a 6 week old. I don't know if there was bullying when they were all together or whether there wasn't enough food provided in the beginning. So he may grow quite quickly now if that's the case as there's plenty to go round. When he came you can see his spine just a little bit too much. Looked like a pyramid already looks a lot better now but not perfect. I'll keep an eye on them but for the time being they're fine

Well I thought I'd update as I had quite a shock this evening. Almost certain Oreo's pregnant. Got a short clip.

https://youtu.be/gFGG9D-VF-E

Lots of movement at the 1 min mark. She'd be roughly 7-8 weeks now assuming she mated on her first heat at 3-4 weeks.

Let's just hope it's gas ..

She looks very pregnant to me (but I'm no expert).

I'm always shocked by how early guinea pigs mature. They're almost independent the moment they're born!

Yeh I know. I think they're the only rodent born with fur as well as eyes open. Also able to walk. Able to eat solids from day one but rely heavily on mums milk until 2 weeks old. Become fertile at 3-4 weeks. Quite amazing really.

I got a photo of Oreo from a few days ago. Seems like she's got bigger since then

Right little update.

They're both doing fine. Still no babies. She's roughly 55 days into pregnancy (off the assumption that she was born 29th August and came into heat as soon as she was 4 weeks old). Guinea pig pregnancy can last anywhere from 58 days to 72. It depends on litter size really.

Update

As I write this there's still no babies. Oreo is doing very well, getting bigger by the day. Hopefully she'll pop any day now. She now weighs 929g!

Since I've had her she's gained roughly 350g since I got her.

Chunk is doing well too. Still smaller than Oreo in every way but he seems happy and healthy. He now weighs 595g and gained roughly 250g since I got him. Will add photos soon

Update

We have babies!

I think one boy (with black dot on his back) and one girl (still a bit bloody). Oreo is doing very well and taking care of them.

The boy is 104g!
The girl is 118g!

So very big babies
