Well I've worked out a way for me to have piggies and not worry about Pebbles getting to them.

Right, without further ado, meet Oreo and Chunk. They've been here almost a week and have settled well and already taking food from my hand. Wheeking and popcorning everyday.

They were meant to boars but turns out Oreo is a she and she is likely to be pregnant. So they're in a split cage now so they can't get to each other but can still see each other.

Chunk will be castrated when his testes descend in a couple of months.

Here's the photos taken on the first day:

That's a bit drastic to have Chunk castrated.
Couldn't you pair him up with another male and Oreo with a female?

Very lovely piggies.

There's no other pigs at the moment and tbh it's not as drastic as you think. Most boars that go into rescue now are castrated to allow them to live with sows. Also 2 boars can fight over a female in heat so I don't want another boar if I can help it also I'll have the worry of what if one of the boars get in with the sows? If they're neutered I won't be worried about any pregnancies.

Ah right. I had piggies in the 70's and 80's and i guess things have changed since then. Didn't know that guinea pigs can be neutered and always thought they were too small an animal.

I thought so too but when I did some research males can be neutered it's preferred over a sow spay as it's less invasive (providing testes have descended). In English speaking countries they'll only neuter once that happens BUT in Germany (I think) they can be done at 3 weeks old I believe.

If they were both boars I would leave them intact as, unlike dogs, removing testes only stops them reproducing (after a 6 week window as they can still produce then) it doesn't change behaviour, which I found rather interesting. But (hopefully Oreo is pregnant) so he'll be moving back in with her after the op + 6 weeks.

By the time his testes are visible, Oreo would of had her litter so will know of the sexes then, but as it stands the plan is to castrate Chuck in the New year in order for him to live with Oreo.

I understand your concern though and wouldn't do it unless I had to as putting any animal under anesthesia is risky, especially rodents.

I have a neutered gerbil, and that's much smaller than a guinea pig! It's a very simple surgery when the testes are descended. Living in the same room as females can cause problems with male groups of guinea pigs so unless there's a separate living space available it's the safest option.

Good luck with the guinea pigs Engel.

As mine are split at the moment they're is a 2x4 each so would have a 2x8 to run around in when everything is sorted. Which tables did you get? My c&c is balancing on 2 cages and a camping table
