Re: My gerbils
I had gerbils when I was young and they were adorable! I had two little boys and they were so friendly and were super easy to handle! Don't really remeber taming them at all as I had them as tiny babies and they were much more confident then the hamster I am taming now! x

If they are handled from a young age they don't really need "taming" as such at all. I think it's probably the same for hamsters too. Some relatives of mine had two Roborovski hamsters that bred. The parents are still not really tame after almost a year, but the offspring (which I think they handled as soon as it was safe to do so) are apparently very cuddly and love being handled. With gerbils there is the advantage that they can safely be handled much sooner than hamsters as well.

That does seem to be the case! They were such fun pets, I used to love giving them a whole piece of paper and they would go mad chewing it up and making a nest! It's great that they are so social too, not like our hammies!

Re: My gerbils
Hi sushi. I brought my new fur bean home yesterday his name is Ziggy. He is currently settling into the animal room and his vivarium. I'll leave him in peace for a few days/week but he seemed quite happy yesterday once we got home. He's 18 months old so nearing middle age.

Re: My gerbils
dalis_mum, how is your gerbil Ziggy doing?
Since I last posted in this thread I've adopted two new gerbils. Storm (grey with white belly) and Rocket (black) are a neutered male and female pair from a local rescue. Storm was found abandoned in a box and Rocket fell out with her sisters and her owner couldn't keep her. The rescue had Storm neutered and introduced him to Rocket.

Re: My gerbils
Those are beautiful Sushi. I'm especially jealous of rockets little fingerless gloves look.
Ziggy is a happy little man. Digging, chewing and playing in his sand bath. He doesn't have any interest in his wheel though. I have to dust it. Lol. I recently moved all my animals into the living room where it's cooler and he seems to like the extra activity out and about. Can I ask what cage you use for your gerbils,?

Wheels can be a bit hit or miss with gerbils. They have a hopping kind of gait which doesn't seem to work with the larger, heavier wheels, but the smaller wheels can be uncomfortable for them.
My new pair are in a Kerry terrarium and my females Lily and Daisy are in a 120cm tank from Junglepets.
