Thank you all (again) for all the sound advice.
How lovely that you took it gently at their pace. Sounds like you were well rewarded for your efforts.

Thsts the only approach that's acceptable in my book. Dominating animals just to be able to hold them.. that's just uncalled for. My WW hates being held and handled, so I don't hold him, simple as that. I'd never ever want to cause stress to them.

Like I said, I only had to do that because they had health problems that needed urgent attention, I had to handle them twice a day for ten days to give medical attention as directed by the vets.
I wasn't chasing them round the cage, I would direct them into a corner and pick them up from there to minimise the stress, the whole thing lasted seconds.
It's do able if you do it properly.

I wouldnt chase them round the cage or anything like that.
I just wanted you to know that I wasn't scaring the life out of them by chasing them all over the place.

It just so happened that this lead to them becoming very tame very fast.
The more you handle them the less scared they will become of being handled.

I think everyone has a different approach when it comes to taming and different techniques will suit different animals/owners in different situations. You really just have to go with your gut don't think anybody is in the wrong here.

Clearly Princess Pixie what you and your sister have been doing is ideally suited to your piggies as they responded so well. It's lovely that you are both being rewarded for your kindness in rescuing them and your patience too. They're very lucky to have found such a loving home.

It was so funny yesterday, we had them out for play time and piggie proofed the bedroom (so we thought), the more confident one (Moses) was like a little sweetie pie, wandering nicely around, sitting on my lap, climbing over me, and Gabe the more nervous one was hesitant to come out so my sister was hand feeding her cabbage leaves, after about an hour Gabe decided to come out and was a bit scared but grew in confidence every second! Next thing, the little devil has knocked over the storage box lids I put up to stop the pair of them going under my sisters bed.. he was under there for two hours. exploring, grooming, chilling out, we were calling him, coaxing him with carrots, but no, he was happy as a clam under there. So of course Moses decided to follow him.
They eventually came wandering out on their own after about three hours and happily waddled off back to their beds. It was comical!

Awww they sound like mischievous little so and sos. But you can never get annoyed by a guinea pig - they are just too cute. Sounds as though they are getting much more confident around you. I love that they are prepared to free roam. My gp always just sat like a pudding if you put him down and waited for you to pick him up again! Lol they are silly things. Like the name choices, by the way.

Have you tried them on cucumber? That was my gp’s favourite. Well, it was second to grass anyway. I swear they ar such easy pets to please. Give them some freshly cut grass and they are in heaven!

Ah this thread is making me miss my boy

Three hours!!!

My two are mad about grass and carrot. They have recently become keen on their pellets. Harringtons are the only ones that they will accept.

Given they came from a background where they were possibly mishandled or not handled, you have both done the right thing here by allowing the piggies to come to you! Patience is always rewarded and whether it`s mice, gerbils, hamsters, rats or guinea pigs, it`s always best to let them dictate the pace.

I would do the same thing. Sit on the floor, chat away like a mad woman and just sit there with food on me or by me and allow the pigs to do their thing, even if they still didn`t come close or wanted to be hand fed. If you continue this routine, they will settle in and will soon realise they are in a good place.

Well done taking them on ladies. Stick with it, chill out and enjoy them. x

What you have achieved so far is wonderful, these little piggies confidence will grow more. Totally agree with RH about sitting with them and chatting away like a mad woman, I do that with my hammy lol!
