I couldn't believe the toy winner. It seemed more like a walking ball of fluff than a dog but then again I don't know much about the Pekingese.

That's good. Westies are pretty cute.

They're one of the breeds of dog that I'd consider getting in the future actually.

I don't really like the idea of it but we get free tickets through uni and so I wanted to go and see what it was all about.

There are some absolutely amazing dog breeds out there (I've fallen in love with a beautiful dog called a Hovowart) but some that are just so manipulated that they are just walking deformities - I won't mention any particular breeds as I don't want to cause an argument but there has been some uproar about certain ones being very poor examples of what a healthy dog should be! As vet students we also get 2 lectures included in our day - its basically the Kennel Club trying to change the mind of vets about pedigree dogs but the data and information they gave in those lectures was so skewed it was ridiculous! It did nothing to win me over.

So yeah - I don't like this overbreeding of unhealthy dogs AT ALL but it was great to see and learn about all the breeds that I will see in the future and to be honest most of the breeders are really on the ball with inherited diseases and are trying to improve the health of the breed. There are just those few....

I find that a lot of actual breed club members vs the members of Kennel Clubs tend to be more responsible and know more about genetic diseases and such and breed away from them while most Kennel Clubs don't care about more than appearance.

I tuned in last night only to see which dog would win and that little Westie was a stand out for me. Her coat was almost transparent and her manner impeccable. Two winning combinations as well as looking like a future champion and now she now is. Although I did like the reserve whippet too! Thought she was immaculate.

However, I have to agree with those regarding the breeding ethics behind such shows and that German Shepherd should never have been there (the one they showed the footage of as being disunited and almost deformed). Shocking that this dog was judged as being `okay` standard. The judge should have gone to Specsavers....

All in all, Crufts will always attract criticism and rightly so if `some` breeds are continuing to cause debate. I`ve owned dogs throught my life but don`t have one now due to pain issues and being sensible about having the time and energy for a dog. But if I wanted another dog, it definitely wouldn`t be a pedigree. A little cross bred bandy Jack Russell would suit me! x

I have a Jack Russell mix,and he is a psycho but I do love him!I would never completely rule out purebred dogs though,as some breeds are actually relatively healthy. It just depends on the breeder,as not all breeders breed to the same standards in terms of health and genetics.I'm very particular over breeders and such for any animal, but really even mixed breed dogs can be unhealthy and to say that all purebreds are unhealthy is definitely not right.

I watched some of crafts. I like the agility, fly ball, obedience mostly, but do watch the judging as well.
