Question Guinea Pigs

HI,
I am looking after my friends guinea pigs, as they are on holiday at the moment. I was wandering if there is anyway to exercise them????
They have 3 cages; one normal cage, a open top cage and a outside cage.
It is too cold to put them outside!!! Its 6-8 degrees C.

So how can we get them to loss weight other than dieting them?

Thanks Saskia

Its actually very rare to find an overweight guinea pig. They are naturally chunky little animals and their weights have a huge variation to them. An adult male guinea pig can range from being 900-1200g and an adult female can range between 700-900g.

Unlike rabbits, guinea pigs don't NEED a run area for exercise. If the cage is suitable for two guinea pigs (should be 120cm long at least for two piggies) and they have suitable enrichment such as tunnels and things that they are interested in (varies between each piggie) then they have a suitable exercise area.

My guinea pigs (I have 3) are in a large 6ft hutch (kept outside) and during the summer months they go out in the run for exercise, but its mainly so they can graze on the grass.

It's better to have fat wee piggies as when they start losing weight it's the end of the road happened with all 6 of my gps I lost we fed them baby food but none of them pulled through sadly so I'd say fat happy healthy piggies enjoying life I would let mine out to run about indoors they loved it popcorning away and there wee chirps they love outdoors on grass but would need supervision as they can be wee menaces and escape lol

If you are concerned about their weight then that is something to raise with their owners when they're back from holiday. Don't put them on a diet or try and start exposing them to things they're not used to while they're with you. That's definitely something for the piggies mum and dad to take care of

It's lovely that you're concerned for them and want to do your best for them but it's not really your place to change the care routine for someone elses animals.

Thank you soo much for all the help.
Shannonmcn: The owners of the pigs already know and they did have to take them to the vets about their weight. (the vet was very surprised about how heavy they were ops.) So they are already on a small diet.

Viki s: Its good to know they are happy!!

hrl 20100: They have lots of things to do so they should be ok and they have a big cage.

Thanks again Saskia
