Unhappy Poor mice care.

I feel really awful but ive taken my sisters 2 mice out of her room for the night, she takes their wheel out at night because she's 10 and she can't sleep with the noise, mum doesn't want them and we can't keep them downstairs because of the dog! I put their wheel in and one ran none stop for an hour, shows how exercise deprived they are. She's only young and doesn't get them being nocturnal and such, but I don't want to put them back to leave them pretty much neglected of exercise. What do I do?!

can you get them silent wheels on stands so they don't rattle on the bars? or maybe they'll use a saucer? I've never kept mice so I can't give practical advice. But if it's the wheel being noisy then maybe that will help?

Or earplugs

That's another problem, their cage being too small, it's one of those tiny ones pet stores sell for hamster so a silent spinner wouldn't fit! I can't understand why mum allowed her to get mice while money's tight and she can't afford the bare essentials, sigh.

Such a dilemma this when you want something changed and are restricted. Would your sister allow you to keep the mice in your room? She needs to realise that her beauty sleep, albeit important, is depriving her wee pets of having fun when they need it and wheel running is all part of husbandry. Being 10, I can understand why she perhaps doesn`t `get it`.

I kept mice for over ten years and although they are easy to keep, they are relatively prone to illness like respiratory issues and tumours. Are the mice females or males? I take it they will be female due to the smell males give off!

Your best bet here would be to convince your sister to let the mice live in your space and she can come in and see them when necessary? Does she bother with them much?

They're both female sisters, around a month or so old, she will play with them for around an hour but not daily, and around 3pm when they're meant to be sleeping, when I took them last night their food bowl was pretty much wood shavings and feces, she's having a rough time as our mum and her dad are getting a divorce so trying to explain just makes her cry, I'll probably take them at night now and make sure they get what they need.

In that case, please don't take her pets away. I went through something similar and because I was upset I wasn't brushing my cat enough (supposedly that was the reason) and my mom got rid of him. We were really close (the cat and I, not my mom and I) and I spiraled into a terrible, years-long depression as a result. If it were me, I would just try to help out with the things she may be forgetting to do but without chastising. I'm sure she already feels bad enough x

Also, can she get counseling to help her through?

I`m sorry to hear that. It`s good though that you are around to make sure the mice have food and water daily. Their needs must be met even though there are human issues going on. The anxiety divorce can bring depends on the adults dealing with it without too much disturbance to the children. very situation is different but pets can suffer as a consequence and rely on having some kind of routine, even if it isn`t set to a clock. As long as their basic needs are met. x

Divorce is extremely hard for everyone but kids really do suffer, offer to help her with the care. A lot of parents think that the kids don't know what's going on but, they do and it can have such a bad effect on them. Thank goodness you're there to help with the mice and to help her get them into a routine. This will help her and make her realise that pets need looking after.
