The new labels for the harness arrived as did some saddlebags! He had his first try of the empty bags today and barely noticed they were there. They are much larger than I thought so I'll have to be very careful about not overloading him. He's not allowed any weight in them at the moment as he's been prescribed rest by the vet. He's not going to be impressed at the curtailing of walks

I took him to the vet today because of an intermittent limp, which both I and the pet sitters had noticed. The vet had a good feel of his knee and there's some fluid on the joint so he's going in on Tuesday for sedation, full examination and x-rays. If it's his cruciate ligament or patellar luxation (more than grade 1) then he will need surgery. Poor pup just doesn't seem to have the luck. He's mostly really comfy and not in any pain. He's more upset about not being allowed to leap up and down the places he's used to, but a trip to his favourite local pet shop to buy him chews will hopefully keep him occupied over the weekend.

The second I saw "limp" I thought "his knee's slipping. It is such a common problem with Chihuahuas. Fingers crossed for Tuesday's vet visit.

Poor lad, I hope Tuesday goes well and he doesn't need the surgery. I remember when one of my parents dogs needed knee surgery when he was about 9 months old, was a real challenge trying to prevent him overdoing it. Kept feeling really mean when we had to stop him jumping on the furniture or playing games with his sister. Worked out well in the end though

Aww, poor little Rogue. Hope he gets through his limp ok.

Just caught up on the thread. I just don't get some people! In spite of all the education campaigns to teach people not to touch strange dogs without permission they still do. It was less likely to happen with my 100 pound German Shepherd but it did happen. Luckily he was a friendly dog, friendlier than his owner anyway but I could tell he didn't like it when someone would just walk up to him and start grabbing his paws or his ears. He hated that, he was just too good-natured to tell them so. I could tell by his body language that he was uncomfortable though.

Thanks He coped well with sedation for his eye and my vet is good so I know if they suggest surgery then he'd really need it. We'll cross that bridge as and when we need to though.
Thanks for the link, piebald. I've seen similar advertised online but the harnesses are too big for my wee man, and I prefer an H-harness so he can't wriggle out of it if he gets spooked. The patches on the new harness plus the lead wrap have really helped and I'm picking up a lead flag when we get to the trainer for our follow up session. I've tried the yellow dog ribbon, an I Need Space lead and a bandana which have been less successful. I'm going for unsubtle now! I've also stopped trying to be polite to people who approach my dog with intent. I do a lot of blocking them with my body (or hand if he's in my arms) and no more "please ignore him" - I just tell people to not touch and leave him alone as I found they kept getting closer when I was explaining and my aim is to back them off ASAP because I want Rogue's interaction with strangers to be positive not scary or he'll continue to find them intimidating. Hamster shows have really helped as the other exhibitors are really good at letting him take things at his own pace and just ignore him.

Well he's such a cutie I can see why peeps come up to him. I am always impressed when some one asks if they can pet my dog, especially kids. It's a good thing to teach your children. Having said that my pooch thinks everyone is her new best friend so I have the opposite problem.
Glad your one is doing better. X

My little prince is back home and mostly back to his usual self (the anaesthetic is still a little in his system). He's eaten at the vets and just had some dinner here.

The news is good

He had a full examination of his legs, paws and nails as well as x-rays of the hips and knees on both sides. The diagnosis is a bad sprain and treatment is gradually increasing up to his normal walks and phasing out the anti-inflammatories. He had no cruciate ligament problems or patella luxation He's been milking the fact he had a drip in, although he pulled the bandage off as soon as we walked in home:
